Subject: Design and Communication
Graphics
Pupil Year Group: 5th years
Lesson Number: 4
Date: 08-1-15

Topic(s): Structural forms

No. of Pupils: 8
Length of Lesson: 80 minutes
Time of Lesson:14:25-15:45

Previous Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge (Theory)

Skills (Practice)

All students have a background in

technical graphics as they have all
completed the Junior Certificate
programme in technical graphics
Solidworks basic modelling ,Helpful
when teaching Structural Forms
through ICT
Students are familiar with and can
understand the common terminology
used in DCG
From previous topics covered there
are aspects that the students will have
covered before
From previous lessons they now
understand how the classroom will
work and the rules and routines Im
implementing.
Rectangle method for constructing
Hyperbolic curve
New terminology

The correct and efficient use of the

technical graphics equipment
Students can complete neat, tidy and
accurate drawings to a high standard
Students are familiar with and can
understand the common terminology
used in DCG
Oracy Skills and peer teaching and
peer assessment,
Sketching skills and working with the
computer program Solidworks
Visualization of objects from different
views and in 3D
Rectangle method for constructing
Hyperbolic curve (Division of lines ,
plotting points)

Rationale
This is my fourth lesson, At this stage of the students DCG course what I am trying to develop is the basic
fundamentals and principles structural forms and build upon previous knowledge. I will start the topic by
constructing a hyperbolic curve with the new method elements method in this lesson. This is a good point to move
onto next as it relate to previous to methods and is slightly more difficult and builds on previous knowledge.

Aims
The aims of this lesson are to:

Explain the new topic hyperbolic curves

Create a positive working environment

Explain to pupils where structural forms can be seen in everyday life.

Generate hyperbolic curve elements method

Enable students to Grasp new method elements method

Explain hyperbolic curves construction

Literacy
Strategies

A new topic equals a large

amount of new
vocabulary for students to
learn such as asymptote
and parabolic. The
teacher will have to write
each new word on the
board and explain clearly
what it means pictures
will also be used to
explain the words.
Word wall
Annotation of drawings
Questioning on words
Explanation of new words

Numeracy
Strategies

Key dimensions on
drawings to figured out by
students
Scaling
Mathematics
Measuring
Questioning students
on measurements

Oracy
Strategies
Model competent
speech and show
them the difference
between clarity and
slang
Get students to sound
out new words as a
group
Peers teaching and
peer presentation

Graphicacy
Strategies

Pictures
Models
Visual aids in relation to
new techniques
Real life objects
Sketching

Differentiation Strategies
Gender Inclusion

Not an issue all male class

Inclusion of students opinions on drawings
Include all students through peer class discussion
I will have to be very clear and easy to understand when

Multicultural Inclusion

talking within the classroom as English may not be these

students first language.

From speaking with cooperating

teacher Ive been informed that all the students have a

decent level of English.

Special Needs Strategies

The students in this class have no special educational needs

Extra work that can be added onto the drawing for fast
students
Differentiation through classroom organization i.e. seating
plans, cooperative learning will be used, I plan to devise my
own seating plan to mix the students one higher with one
lower level as this will promote peer teaching.

Mixed ability Teaching

Strategies.

Differentiation through open ended tasks allowing each

student to respond to their own ability assessment for
learning is an area that will be promoted and will help
students understand where they are at with their learning
and how to improve it as well.
3 Students must be catered for as they arent as strong at
drawing, to do this I will ask less of them in the question and
encourage them to improve their accuracy and speed they
will be seated beside stronger students to promote peer
teaching and learning.

Learning Outcomes & Corresponding Assessments

Learning Outcomes (Los)

Assessment of Los

1. Relate to my methods of
explaining the DCG question
