Honors 496
Final Presentation Outline
General
Learning Statement: My learning statement reflects the transformations I have made in
college. My undergraduate experience has been a journey. I have learned to embrace the
failures and accomplishments, and to try and accept that fear of the unknown is a good thing.
Not having a plan can lead to outcomes even better than you could have imagined.
Freshmen
Chemistry 152: This series reflected the unhappiness of my freshmen year. I came into
college very eager, pre-med, and quickly found myself drowning in the intro chemistry
series. I started to feel unsettled in pre-med.

Volunteering at UW Medical Center: This was an experiential learning project that adapted
with me as I changed over the course of my time at UW. I started as an escort, gaining
general hospital knowledge. I was then hired as a student assistant and later started
volunteering in the physical therapy wing. My hands on experiences cemented my
coursework.

Sophomore
Womens Studies: I started branching out of my coursework and taking classes on a whim.
This independent project helped me do research on my own time and take on an independent
project.

ASUW Involvement: Feeling unsettled in my coursework I began reaching outside of the

classroom to try and find some direction. I worked with UW leaders and the elections
administration committee for a year. Although I didnt enjoy the political sides of ASUW, I
gained a lot of personal skills and I think a lot of my confidence to change paths was fueled
by my mentorship program with Karthikah.

Junior
Biology 118/119: This was the first quarter I started taking pre-physical therapy prerequisites. It re-instilled my confidence that I am intelligent, and capable of taking science
courses but I needed a different direction. Our final project taught me a lot about working
with difficult people, and design- 2 things that came in handy later on in my college career.

Honors DNA and Evolution: This class led to my development of becoming a more
independent thinker and scientist. Jon constantly pushes his students to question and come to
answers on their own. He ended up writing me a letter of recommendation for graduate
school and I am in his class for the second year in a row. His teaching served as an
instrumental component of my time at UW.

Student Athletic Training: This served as amazing hands on experience to really cement my
plan to become a physical therapist. I was able to work one on one with the same athletes for
an entire year, develop relationships, and learn skills like taping, modalities, and assist with
exercises. My mentorship from my athletic trainer Jenn helped guide me through my
application process.

Senior
Study Abroad in Rome: This was one of the most life-changing experiences. I got out of my
comfort zone and learned really valuable knowledge about food and cooking. My final
project was a food blog that highlighted several of my cooking projects intermixed with
Michael Pollans book Cooked and several other readings.

Physical Therapy: I include my personal statement, which is the most meticulous piece of
writing I have ever done. I am really proud of the final product. The experience of applying
to physical therapy was immensely stressful and humbling. I finished interviewing and
hearing back from schools this last month and have decided to attend the University of
Washington Physical Therapy program in the fall. I am excited for the next chapter in my
life.
Concluding Thoughts: Reflecting upon my time at UW and in Honors, I am grateful for the
plethora of experiences I had and how they all combined to shape a path I never knew I
wanted. The unknown can be amazing and failure can be a blessing in disguise. I am glad
that I listened to my struggle in pre-med classes and allowed myself to adapt to go into a field
that I am really excited about, and I have been successful!
