Futsal Rules

1) The Start of Play


Procedure: The coin toss is followed by the kickoff; the opposing team must wait outside of the center circle until the ball has been touched by
the offensive team. Ensuing kick-offs are taken after goals are scored and at the start of the second half.

2) Players on the pitch

4 field players plus a goalie on each side.


There must be at least 3 players on a side at any time; a team is disqualified if it does not have at least 3 eligible players.

3) Game length
Duration: Two equal periods of 20 minutes
Halftime: Maximum of 15 minutes

4) Goalkeeper possession

The goalkeeper must get rid of the ball within 4 seconds of establishing possession. The goalkeeper can only handle the ball once per team
possession; If the ball is played back to the keeper after he/she has touched the ball in the same possession, it is an indirect kick for the
opposing team at the spot.

5) Goal Clearance

Rather than a goal kick, the keeper must throw the ball in-play if it goes beyond the goalline when last touched by the opposing team. The
ball is not in play until it has passed outside of the penalty area. Goalkeepers may score from the floor or by punting but may not score
directly from a throw.

6) Penalty Kicks

A penalty kick is taken at the 6 meter position if a handball or a foul is called in the penalty area. If a team accumulates more than 5 fouls in
a half, the opposing team is given a penalty kick to be taken at the 10 meter position for each additional foul. Goalkeepers may not leave the
line on a 5 meter penalty kick but are free to roam inside penalty area on a 10 meter penalty kick.

7) Fouls
Slide tackles are not permitted in futsal, however, players are permitted to slide in order to block a shot or pass. Yellow cards operate the
same as in outdoor soccer. If a red card is given, that player is ejected and the team must play a man down for 2 minutes or until the opposing

8) Substitutions
There is no limit on the number of substitutions made in a game. All players but goalkeepers can enter and
leave as they please; goalkeeper substitutions can only be made when the ball is out of play and with a referee's consent.

9) Out of Bounds
The entire ball must pass the touch line or goal line to be out of bounds. Rather than throw the ball in, players must place the ball on touch
line and kick the ball in. Opposing players must be 5 meters from kick-in spot. A kick-in is always indirect.

10) Time outs


Each team is allowed 1 time out per half. A time out can last no longer than 60 seconds.

11) Corner Kicks


A corner kick is always direct. Must be taken from the corner where the goal line and the touch line meet. Opposing players must be at least
5 meters from the kick position.

12) Free Kicks


Direct: The kick taker can shoot the ball from the free kick position.
Indirect: the ball must touch a player before it can enter the goal.

13) Accumulated Fouls


A 10 meter penalty kick is given if a team fouls 5 or more times in a half. Once a team has accumulated 5 fouls in a half, all free kicks are
direct.

14) Shoot-outs
Any five players from each team can take penalty shots in a shoot-out. All shots are taken from the six meter position. A coin toss is used to
decide the order. If the score is tied after each team has taken 5 kicks, the game will go in to sudden death.
