I never really paid attention to some of the words that my friends and I used
during our
conversations. For the most case, we all speak normal, proper English and
really dont engage in
such uncommon language, so we all thought. I called two of my friends with
a pen and paper
and actually took notes during our conversation. It was a little difficult to
listen out for the
words that we usually used because to us, its the norm, but I managed to
listen carefully, and
have an interesting conversation with my girls at the same time. The words
that I came up with
from the conversation are as follows: shade, sideways, ain, ion, word,
whatcha, gotta, chick,
cray-cray, and aint. Towards the end of the conversation, I told my friends
what I had to do for
this assignment. When I read the words to my friends, they were
embarrassed and swore that
they did not use any of the words listed above. They asked me not to use or
included their
names in this assignment. We laughed about it and they wished me luck. Its
funny to me how

when you are engaging in a conversation with a friend, that you really dont
pay attention to
the words that you use, but when you are engaging in a business
conversation the word
changes. I will list the word, meaning, how is it used, and provide a sample
sentence below.
Shade means to disrespect or diss a friend. It is an adverb. It describes an
action. For example:
She threw shade at the girl they had on the same dress.
Sideways means to have an issue with another person by looking at them. It
is a verb. It
describes an action. For example: Why was she looking at him, sideways?
Ain means I didnt. It is a verb. It describes an action. For example: Ain know
that Farm Fresh
doubled the value of your coupon, on Tuesday.
Ion mean I dont. It is a verb. It describes an action. For example: Ion know
about you, but I am
exhausted.
Word mean for-real or say its not so. It is a verb that describes an action. For
example: I went
to the store today, and the lady in front of me paid for all of groceries. My
friend would reply by
saying, Word!
Whatcha means what are you. It is a phrase. For example: Whatcha doing
tonight?
Gotta mean got to, or have to. For example: I gotta go.
Chick means a woman, or a female. It is a noun. It is used to describe a
person. For example: Im
not that chick who walks out of the house half naked.

Cray-cray means crazy. It is a verb. It describes the action of a person. For

example: The girl is
cray-cray for leaving her children in car, so that she can go shopping.
Aint mean is not. It is a verb. It describes the action of a person, place or
thing. For example: I
aint going to be out here too late, because I have class in the morning.
I really enjoyed being a Lexicographer. Even though some of the words may
be in the
dictionary, the way my friends and I use the words in a sentence, mean
something entirely
different than what is listed in the dictionary. Language plays a huge role in
todays society.
Language is the tool that we all use to communicate.
