Chemistry I

Mrs. Scofield
East Rutherford High School
Spring 2015

Chemistry I is the study of the nature, properties, and interaction of matter.

In Chemistry I Honors, students are expected to work independently on a
variety of assignments, master a few additional concepts, and accept greater
responsibility for their learning. Chemistry I is a foreign language course, a math
course, a history course, and a science course combined into a challenging
academic experience.

Course Objectives are determined by the North Carolina Department of

Public Instruction.
A student enrolled in Chemistry I will:
1. Develop abilities necessary to do and understand scientific
enquiry;
2. Build an understanding of the structure and properties of
matter;
3. Build an understanding of regularities in chemistry;
4. Build an understanding of energy changes in chemistry;
5. Develop an understanding of chemical reactions.

State mandated test--An N.C. Final exam developed by NCDPI will be

given at the end of the semester. This test will count as 20% of your semester
grade for the class.

Supplies:

!3 ring binder (1 inch)

! Loose leaf notebook paper
! Set of four tab dividers
! Blue or black ink pens only, and pencils
! Flash Drive (USB Thumb Drive)
! Scientific or graphing calculator
(access one on Mac: Finder applications calculator)

**Science fee of $3.00 due by Friday, January 30

activities, concepts covered, and

!Class Notebook ----divided into organized sections. suggested sections

are: class notes, homework problems, labs, and tests. Your notebook is an
important resource to prepare for the comprehensive test at the end of the
semester

!Daily NotesNotes will be taken on a daily basis. It is the students

responsibility to get any notes missed due to absence.

!Daily Homework-- Homework will be used used to practice and master the

concepts you will be tested on. Consistently completing assigned

homework is VITAL to your success in this class. Although the vast majority of
your grade will come from your test grades, homework will be randomly
assigned an effort quiz grade to encourage diligence.

!Labs-- LAB SAFETY RULES WILL BE FOLLOWED AT ALL TIMES.

Failure to
adhere to lab safety procedures or horseplay in the lab will result in a zero
for that activity and possible loss of lab privileges. Labs missed due to
absence will be made up at the teacher's discretion.
!Test and Quiz Grades--Grades will be based on mastery of the Learning
Goals. Students will be able to revise their Learning Goal grades within the
six weeks the unit was taught. Time and method required for re-evaluation
will be determined by the instructor.
!ProjectsIndividual or team projects and WAC assignments will be
assigned throughout the semester.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY/CHEATING OF ANY TYPE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

Cheating will result in a 0/F grade for work as well as possible parent
meetings, and administrative referral. Work receiving a 0 for cheating may
NOT be redone. This includes but is not limited to: copying another
students homework, using a cheat sheet or copying answers on tests, and
plagiarism or using cut and paste on written assignments or projects (even
extra credit assignments)

Grading
Six weeks grades will be based on mastery of Learning Goals representing what
a Chemistry student should know, understand and be able to do based on the
New Essential Standards for science.
Each unit will include a number of learning goals which all contribute an
equal amount toward your final grade.
Your mastery of each goal will be determined by a test at the conclusion
of the unit.
Homework assignments and classwork are CRITICAL--You MUST complete
your work to master the material taught. HOWEVER, homework
assignments and classwork are not graded.
A minimum grade may be assigned for a learning goal based on
completion and demonstration of effort on daily homework assignments
and class work.
Class assignments, projects, and quizzes will factor into your grade as
determined by the teacher.
The Nomenclature Unit (formulas and names of compounds) is so critical
to success in chemistry that it is a designated mastery unit. Students must
show mastery of 80% on this test. Any score less than 80 will be recorded
as a 0 in the gradebook. The test can be taken multiple times until
mastery is achieved.
East High Grading Scale will be followed:

A = 93-100
B = 85-92
C = 77-84
D = 70-76
F = 0-69

Class Rules
1) BE IN YOUR SEAT when the bell rings,
2) BRING ALL MATERIALS to class including textbook, notebook, pencil

and/or pen, and any class assignments.

3) Computers stay IN YOUR BOOK BAG unless you are instructed to get

them out.

4) NO EATING OR DRINKING IS ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM.

5) Be RESPECTFUL to instructor and to classmates.
6) NO BATHROOM BREAKS allowed during class.
7) DO NOT TOUCH lab equipment or materials until instructed to do so.

In Case of Absence
!Class activities and assignments will be recorded on my website daily. If
you are absent from class YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for checking this resource,
getting ALL make-up work and notes, and turning in your assignments.
! Work missed due to an absence must be completed as soon as possible
to avoid falling behind. I am available daily for tutoring and makeup work.

About Technology
!Students are expected to use technology responsibly. Using your computer
in class is a privilege, not a right!
!Some assignments in this class will be submitted electronically, so you should
pay close attention to properly naming and organizing your files in folders on
your computer.
!Students must remember their usernames and passwords for all accounts.
Not being able to access your account will not be an excuse for not
completing an assignment.
!No extension of deadlines will occur due to technology issues such as
computer crashes. Dont wait until the last minute to complete your
assignments, and always save and back up your work.
