Poem Comparison
Out of all the poems we have read in class, I chose to mimic the poem Because I could
not stop for Death by Emily Dickinson. I chose an Emily Dickinson poem because I like her
style and her poems are easier to follow and understand. I also like the fact that her poems are
not super long because super long poems tend to make me loose interest. Because I could not
stop for Death was not too long or too short, it was just right.
The form and meter of Emily Dickinsons poem is very unique, so I mimicked it down to
a tee. Both poems have six stanzas and in each stanza there are four lines. Both poems are
written in iambic tetrameter, but each line is different. The first line of each stanza is eight
syllables and then the next line is six syllables and so forth. This pattern continues throughout the
entire poem. The meter is not the only unique feature in this poem, but the rhyme scheme is as
well. For both poems the first stanza has the rhyme scheme of ABCB. Because Emily Dickinson
does not rhyme in certain stanzas, neither did I. The second stanza has no particular rhyme at all,
but stanza three has a rhyme of ABCD. The pattern is ABCB, no rhyme, and ABCD nothing else.
The form and meter is very important, but is not the only interesting part.
It is noticed in Dickinsons poem that she capitalized all nouns and so did I. Capitalizing
the nouns throughout the poem makes them seem important and it really stands out. There is one

more comparison I would like to make before I get into the differences. Both poems have a
female speaker in which they are both reminiscing back to a moment they remember vividly.
Emily Dickinsons speaker goes back to the day of her death, whereas my speaker reminisces on
a dream she had. Both poems have a slight change in setting and the bug change takes place in
the last stanza. Because I could not stop for Death is a poem is a poem about death, but my poem
is about the infatuation of two people that will hopefully become lovers.
Emily Dickinson used personification in her poem, but I chose to use an onomatopoeia. I
am no poet, but because of my close comparisons it is obvious that I am mimicking Emily
Dickinsons style of poetry. I definitely enjoyed writing this poem because I had to not only dig
deep into Dickinsons poem, but I had to be creative and create my own.
