theIntegratingbookonthehistoryofdigitaltechnologiesineducation.Sinceminoritiesinthe
U.S.aremorelikelytobelievethateducationwillhelptheircareers,weneedtothinkabout
findingwaystoeducatemorepeoplemoreeffectivelyandtechnologyenhancesthiseffort.How
theU.S.viewsthefutureoftechnologymustbeconsideredinfiguringouthowtousethetalents
ofallpeople.Othercountrieshavesimilargoalsforeducatingtheircitizenry,thoughdiffering
situationsandapproaches.ChoosetheU.S.oranothercountryandmaketwosuggestions
abouthowwecanusetechnologytoincreaselearningopportunities.Citetwoarticles
supportingthesepredictions.

ThefirstthingIthinkwecandoismaketheISTEstandardsapriorityinourschool
curriculum.WhenNoChildLeftBehindcameabout,allthefocusturnedtothemathand
readingstandards.NowallthefocushasturnedtotheCommonCoreStateStandards
(CCSS)andtextbookadoptionprogramsthatarealignedwiththeCCSS.Ihavetaughtfor
fourteenyearsandwasunawareoftheISTEuntilItookEDCI718acoupleofyearsago.
ISTEstandardshavenotcomeupinanyofourconversationsaboutstandardsorteaching
practices.Iftheydidcomeup,itwouldprobablybesuggestedthatwehaveenoughonour
platealready.Andtoadegree,thatwouldbeaccurate.Butthatalsodoesntmeanwe
shouldignorethem.Weshouldusetheminconjunctionwithourstatestandards.Ithink
thiswouldbetterpreparealllearnersforthefuture.
Thesecondthingwecandoismaketechnologymoreaccessibleathome.Technology
hascomealongwayinschool.Manyclassroomshaveadoptedonetoonetechnology
programsinadditiontoschoolcomputerlabsthatallowstudentstoconnecttotheworld
(wellthepartsoftheworldthatarentstoppedbythefirewall).Butwhensomestudentsgo
hometheyareonceagaindisconnected.OneruralschoolinPennsylvaniasawthis
problemandfoundasolution.Theyfeltitwasworththemoneyforthedistricttobuy
internetaccessforthosestudentsthatdidnthaveit.Atfirst,Iwassurprisedbythisidea.
Butaswentthroughthisweekreadingsandvideos,Iwasremindedofitandallofits
potential.AsIreadmoreaboutit,Idiscoveredthereareafewschoolsthathaveprograms
thatofferfreeorlowcostinternet.Manyoftheprogramsaresetupverysimilarto
programsforfreeandreducedlunches.AccordingtoKatrinaSchwartz(2013),some
programssuchasEveryoneOnarenotaffiliatedwithaparticularschoolbutofferinternet
accessfor$10.00permonth.
Ithinkmoreandmoreschoolshouldlookattheseprogramstogiveourstudentsmore
opportunitiestolearn.IfwegiveourstudentsaniPadtouseatschool,theyareonalevel
playingfieldwithotherstudents.Butwhentheygohome,theplayingfieldcanbeverylop
sided.

IcompletelyagreewithmorefocusontheISTEstandards.WhenIwasreadingthetextI
noticedthedatefortheintroductionofthosestandardswasin1998(Robyler,p.9).Ididnot
knowtheyexisteduntillastyear.Thesestandardscouldeasilygoalongwithwhatevercontent
standardsweareusing.

IalsoonlyfoundoutabouttheISTEstandardslastyear.Iwouldliketoseethemusedasa
frameworkforallofthecontentstandardsthatweteach,especiallyinaonetooneschool.With
alloftheinformationthatisavailableonline,thefocusshouldbeplacedonhigherorderthinking
skills,allowingstudentstosynthesizeinformationandcreateaproducttoshowwhattheyhave
learned,ratherthanmemorizingfactsthatcanbefoundonlineinafewseconds.

Ithinkanotherwaytoimprovelearningthroughtechnologywouldbetousetechnologyformore
thanjustsayingIusedtechnology.Allowingstudentstocreatenotjusttakenotesontheir
devices.IattendatraininglastyearbasedontheSAMRmodelwhichtalksaboutdifferentlevels
ofusingtechnologyintheclassroom.Thelowestlevels,whicharenecessary,beingsubstituion
andaugmentation.Whichisbasicallyusingtechnologytoreplacethingsthathavealwaysbeen
done.Forexamplehavingstudentscompleteaworksheetontheirdeviceinsteadofonpaper.
Thenitmovesuptothemodificationandredefinitionlevelsinwhichtasksareredefinedandnew
creationisallowedfor.OnearticleaboutthismodelstatesthatWhentechnologyisusedin
thiswayitleadstothetransformationofclassroom
andstudentworkflowsandthetechnologyisusedinitsmosteffectiveform(iPadsfor
Education).

Inourtextbook,itsaysInanincreasinglytechnologicalsociety,weneedmoreteacherswhoare
bothtechnologysavvyandchildcentered(Robyler,p.10).Teachertrainingandsupportwillbe
essentialasmoreandmorestudentshaveaccesstotechnologyintheclassroom.Boththe
SAMRmodelandtheISTEstandardscanhelpguideteachersinhowtousetechnologyto
supportstudentlearning.

Iwantedtowatchthatone,butranoutoftime!SoIwatchedHPClassroomoftheFuture.Itsa
videocreatedbyHPshowingwhataclassroomofthefuturewouldlooklikewithnew
technology.Eachstudenthadapersonalcomputerandthescreenwasatouchscreentablet.
Thecomputerswereondesksthatcouldrollaroundandwouldallowforvariousclassroom
arrangements.Italsotalkedaboutcollaborationwithoutboundaries,allowingstudentstovideo
conferencewithpeoplearoundtheworld.Andtheteacherwasgettinginstantfeedbackonthe
studentsastheywereworkingontheircomputers.Tobehonest,Ididntfeellikeitwastoofar
fromwhatisalreadyhappeninginschoolsaroundtheworld.

ThatsoundsinterestingandIagreethereareschoolswhoarealreadylikethat.
Thatdoessoundcoolandveryclose.

Doeitherofyouhave1to1inyourschools?

Yes,weareonetoonewithChromebooks,butthisisourfirstyear.Iteach6th,7th,and8th
grade.Wealsodontallowthestudentstotaketheirdeviceshome.

IhaveonetooneiPads.Iteachsixthgradesowedontletthemtakethemhome.

Wehave1to1iPadsaswell.Thatissimilartome.Iteach7thgradebutourdistrictdoesallow
thestudentstotakethemhome68andourHShasairbooks.

Whatchallengesdoesincauseforyoubothwithyourstudentsnotbeingabletotaketheir
deviceshome?
Formeitslimitation.Itsfunnyyouaskthatbecauseitspartofmyresponsetoourquestion.
Mystudentswithinternetaccesscanusetheirgoogleaccountathomeandatschoolbutmy
studentswithoutitarelimitedbecausetheydonthavethedeviseorinternet.

Ithasntbeenalimitationyet,butweareonlytwoweeksin.WithChromebooksusingthe
ChromeOS,thestudentsareabletoaccesseverythingontheirChromebookfromany
computerwiththeChromewebbrowser.Beinganinternationalschool,allofourstudentshave
accesstocomputersandtheinternetathome.Thisisadifferentsituationtomostschoolsin
theStates.

ItwouldcompletelychangehowIdothingsifmykidscouldnttaketheirdevicehome.Eventhe
oneswithoutinternetcanstillworkonthingsthattheydownloadorputintheirreadinglistbefore
theyleavethedistrict.IcouldseehowitwouldntbeasmuchofaconcernforyouKarasince
theyallhavecomputersandinternetathomeanyways.

Ithasn'tbeenhorriblebutwhenIthinkIwouldliketotryaflippedclassroombecauseitsounds
likeacoolidea,IknowIcantdoit.OnetheotherhandwewouldhavealotmorebrokeniPads
iftheydidtakethemhome.

mightbelimitedathomeanyway
