The Soldier

Nathan Hale was born on June 6,


1755 in Coventry, Connecticut.
Hale is probably best remembered
for what people claimed to be his
last words before being hanged:

Nathan Hale was a


soldier that served in
the Continental Army
during the American
Revolutionary War. He
was the only soldier to
volunteer for an
intelligence-gathering
mission (to be a spy) for
General George
Washington. His mission
was to find out the
location of the British.
Unfortunately, he was
soon captured by the
British and executed. He
died September 22,
1776

"I only regret that I have


but one life to give for my
country."

Today, this monument is used to honor Nathan Hale, the brave
soldier who served our country and died fighting for a cause he
truly believed in.

He graduated with first class
honors in 1773 at the age of
18.
Hale became a teacher after
he graduated and then later
a soldier.
Nathan Hale was a soldier in
the Continental Army, under
the command of George
Washington during the
American Revolutionary War.
He was the only person to
volunteer to spy on the
British.
Friends, relatives, fellow
soldiers, teachers and
students all said that he was
kind, gentle, religious,
athletic and intelligent.
Hale had long been
considered an American hero
and in 1985, he was officially
designated that state hero of
Connecticut.

People should know about this monument of Nathan Hale
because he played an important role in our history. He risked
his life to fight for what he believed in. He knew that if he
volunteered to spy on the British there would be a huge risk of
being captured and a chance of being executed but that was a
chance he was willing to take for his country. And so he did!

What Is the Significance of the Monument?


This monument is significant because it is just outside of
the oldest building in the United States, that still houses, its
original government such as the office of the Mayor of New
York City and the chambers of the New York City Council. Most
importantly because Nathan Hale was a brave solider that
fought and died for our country.
