Year Round Interim Housing Proposed by St. Vincent de Paul Village
Councilmember Gloria Comments on the Significant Changes Proposed SAN DIEGO, CA (March 13, 2015) Councilmember Todd Gloria today issued a statement about the proposal by St. Vincent de Paul Village for a year round interim housing facility. The City of San Diego and San Diego Housing Commission issued a request for proposals in December to transition the services from temporary tents that operate for several months each winter to a permanent structure operating year round. The San Diego Housing Commission is scheduled to consider the proposal at its meeting next Friday, March 20. If approved, the proposal will be considered by the San Diego City Council. A results driven year round interim housing facility will help address San Diegos homeless challenges using national best practices. I appreciate the San Diego Housing Commissions efficient work moving this effort forward and look forward to closely examining the proposal from St. Vincent de Paul Village, said Councilmember Todd Gloria. This is the front door to a coordinated system of homeless services, and moving from a tent to a permanent structure and expanding its operation from 16 weeks to 52 weeks will allow us to connect more of our neediest neighbors to the resources required to get them off the streets. The proposal by St. Vincent de Paul Village states the new facility would serve up to 2,835 individuals annually. The emergency tents have served an average of 1,000 individuals in each of the last two years during the winter months they were open. ###
