fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
Question: What are the combining forms that are used with the female reproductive system?
Answer: Answers will vary, but students may recognize hyster/o for uterus, colp/o for vagina, mast/o and

system, lateral view (p. 259)

system, anterior view (p. 260)
Figure 8-4 Views of the breast (p. 261)
Exercise A (p. 291)
Exercise B (p. 292)
Discuss the differences between the
disciplines of obstetrics, gynecology, and
neonatology. For what conditions would a
patient seek a practitioner of each discipline?
Give each student copies of
Figures 8-1 and 8-3. Divide students into
small groups and have them fill in the
missing organs without using their books.
After a reasonable amount of time, determine
which group has correctly named the most
organs, and discuss any errors that were
made. Ask students to include combining
forms along with the names of the organs.
Class Activity
Explain how
these organs
and their
hormones
function in the
processes of
menstruation
and pregnancy.

LESSON 8.2
CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION
Jean's gynecologist has suggested that she undergo salpingolysis in order to increase her odds of
becoming pregnant. What disorder may be in Jean's medical history? How could salpingolysis help
her become pregnant?
Guidelines: A common cause of blocked fallopian tubes is pelvic inflammatory disease. Salpingolysis is a
procedure to remove adhesions and restore patency in the tubes. Once the tubes are open, the ova can travel
freely to the uterus.
OBJECTIVES
Apply your new
knowledge to
understanding
medical terms in
their proper
contexts, such
as medical
reports and
records.

Divide the class into teams.
During a timed session, call out the name of a
combining form. Each team must create as
many reproductive system medical terms from
the combining form as it can in a 60-second
period. After 60 seconds, announce another
combining form.

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION
At 24 weeks into her pregnancy, Terry visits her OB/GYN complaining of headaches, accelerated
weight gain, and swelling in her ankles. The physician tells her that he suspects preeclampsia and
directs her to the emergency room. How can the medical assistant help prepare Terry for her visit to
the ER?
Guidelines: Remaining calm and positive, the medical assistant should reassure Terry that the ER has
facilities that can help confirm or rule out the preeclampsia diagnosis. If confirmed, the ER can start
treatment immediately. The medical assistant can reinforce the fact that prompt treatment is important to
help keep Terry and her baby healthy during the pregnancy.

help a practitioner decide which test or
procedure is most appropriate.
Divide the class into teams.
Write the abbreviations for various terms on
the board and have a scribe for each team
write the abbreviations on a piece of paper.
Then give the groups a short time to tell the
scribe to write the full term next to the
abbreviation. The team with the most correct
explanations wins.
