Metric Threads

M10x1.5-6H M 10x 1.5 6H

(a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f)

(a) M is the symbol for Metric Threads

(b) 10 is the nominal major diameter in millimeters, followed by the symbol which
means by

(c) 1.5 is the pitch in millimeters

(d) 6 identifies the grade of tolerance from fine to coarse. The larger the number,
the greater the tolerance. The number may be a 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. Grades 3-5 are
fine, 7-9 are coarse. Grade 6 is the most commonly used and is the medium
tolerance. A letter placed after the number gives the thread tolerance class of the
internal or external thread. Internal threads are designated by upper case letters
such as G or H. G means a tight allowance and H means no allowance. External
threads are designated by lower case letters such as e, g, or h. e denotes a large
allowance, g denotes a tight allowance and h establishes no allowance.

(e) A blank space a (e) denotes a right hand thread. A right hand thread is assumed
unless an LH is in this space.

(f) refers to the depth or length of thread in millimeters. If left blank as in above the
thread goes all the way through.

Unified and American National Threads

½-13 UNC-2A LH ½ 13 UNC 2 A LH

(a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h)

(a) Major diameter in inches

(b) Threads per inch

(c) Series of thread. UNF = Unified National Fine, UNC = Unified National Coarse,
UNEF = Unified National Extra Fine

(d) Class of fit is the amount of tolerance. 1 means a large tolerance, 2 = general
purpose and 3 = close tolerance.

(e) A = external thread, B = internal thread

(f) Blank space at F = right-hand thread. LH means left hand thread

(g) Blank space identifies a single lead thread. If double or triple lead, “DOUBLE”
or “TRIPLE” must be entered here.

(h) Length of thread.
