LESSON PLAN
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

LESSON ORGANISATION
Year Level: 8

Time: 9am 9.40am

Date: 22/03/2014

Students Prior Knowledge:

Students understand the modelling of matter
Students understand elements and compounds
Students can recognise elements by their symbols
Students can use the snipping tool or CTRL + 4 on
MacBook.

Learning Area: Science

Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum

Differences between elements, compounds and mixtures
can be described at a particle level(ACSSU152)

Scientific knowledge changes as new evidence becomes

available, and some scientific discoveries have significantly
changed peoples understanding of the world (ACSHE134)
General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)
Critical and
Literacy
Numeracy
ICT
competence

creative thinking

Ethical
behaviour

Personal and
Social
competence

Intercultural
understanding

Cross-curriculum priorities (may be addressed in the lesson)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
histories and cultures
Proficiencies:(Mathematics only)

Asia and Australias engagement with Asia

Sustainability

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Explain the contribution that Dmitri Mendeleev made to the scientific community.
Locate elements on the periodic table.
List 2 ways that elements are applied in the world.
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:
Ensure internet connection is available.
Make sure every student has a computer and can log in.

Provision for students at educational risk:

Encourage higher achieving students to choose the
more difficult elements in their name when finding
common uses (rather than group 1, 2 or 3). Lower
achieving students should concentrate on the first 3
groups of the periodic table.
As an online activity, the activities can be performed at
the students own pace, giving extra time for students
to work on sections they are less confident on.

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
Was the complexity of the Mendeleev video appropriate for year 8 students?
Did students retain the important information from the video?
Did students have any problems using LMNTology? How could these problems be avoided?
Was there enough time in class for all activities?
Were students able to find fact about all elements? How effective was google search?
Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:
How much further instruction did students need after reading Weebly instructions?
What questions did students have concerning completing the activities?
Did I walk around the classroom and assess students progress/the elements they had chosen/their ability?
Did I assist every student who needed ICT assistance?
[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Time

Motivation and Introduction:

5 mins

Introduction to www.piktochart.com.
1. Students are to sign up to www.piktochart.com

Resources/References
www.youtube.com/watch?
v=IgA37CNa7Ow

2. Students are to create a blank infograph

3. The first blog of the infograph is to be the title page, with a
background (selected from options on the left-hand side of the
screen) and title (selected from text at the left-hand side of the
screen)
4. The title should be Science Night Poster with a subtitle By
[Students name].
5mins

Students will watch a short biographical video about Mendeleev and the
history of the periodic table. Students will be looking for the development of
the table and Mendeleevs prediction of elemental properties.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

Periodic Table Name Activity
Students spell their full name with periodic elements using the
webpage, www.lmntology.com.
Students snip their name (or ctrl + 4 on mac) and add it to their
Piktochart.
1. Uncovering the fictional elements
Students are to find the elements from their name on the periodic
table. Some elements are fictional and so only a few elements will be
able to be found.
If a students name contains one or less real elements, they should
repeat the first activity using their surname as well.

www.google.com

www.piktochart.com

2. Common uses
Students choose two of the real elements in their name and research
its common uses using search engine, Google (embedded into lesson
page)

3. Piktochart
Students are to add their common uses to their piktochart.

5 mins

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

Class discussion whereby students are to indicate their periodic elements on
a physical periodic table.
Student volunteers present fact about their element.
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
Students are to create the background and title for the following lesson,
Elements and Compounds and invite their parents and friends to Science
Night.
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
Lesson objective 1 will be evident in class discussion on Mendeleev.
Students infographs will demonstrate lesson objectives 2 and 3.
