Project Brief

The family is the first essential cell of human society.

-Pope John XXIII

Without the teachings our family has passed down to us, society would be in turmoil and disarray.
Family is also the first thing you enter into and you never leave until death though one could argue that death is not the end.
In this project I hope to create a house (and home) to accommodate the funny and witty character who will fill the it with happy
memories.

Restrictions:
Topology:
Site:

Building:
Construction:

Family of 4
12x12m square with 12x12m garden (total land space 288sqm)
Height max 3 floors (total height not exceeding 9m)
Masonry or concrete (loadbearing elements) with use of steel framework

Summary:
This project I will explore what makes a home and how can I design not for myself but rather for and on behalf the client. This
project I will explore how to design in accordance to the client needs and requirements whilst adding my own character into the
project.

A good architect controls every element even down to the choices of materials,
custom bespoke hardware and furniture.

Materials and hardware exploration:

-Gavin Richards (NTU Senior Lecturer)

Controlling every element of the building down to the choice of material allows the architects character to come through and express
every joints and lines.
By adding character, the building becomes a custom fit suit for the client; no two buildings should be ever the same.

Due to the nature of the building, I will have to custom design every aspect as the angles make any normal furniture
difficult to install. Furthermore controlling the choice of material will give a personal touch/character to the project.

Openings: Doors

Normal Exterior door

I chose a glass door with chrome handles and hinges to fit
the theme of the project.
The glass is sandblasted to allow light to enter without
violating the privacy of the client.

Internal doors
Most internal doors are hinged however for some space
concerning places, sliding doors allows for opening without
the requirement for the door swing.

Bi-folding doors
Allows maximum light and ventilation in and allows access into other spaces.
When needed, doors can be closed to create barrier to outside world.

JIMMIE LUONG | N052284

Openings: Windows
Roof/Sky lights
Light from these openings let in 60-65% more light than
conventional windows. This is due to how light interacts
with angle of the surfaces.

Normal windows
The use of windows is twofold: allows light in and can be
opened for ventilation.
Most of these types of windows are located in bathrooms
or anywhere that require ventilation as well as natural
light.

Glass curtain wall

Using this system allows for maximum light input whilst still retaining the barrier against
the elements.
The system I chose is a double glazed (argon gas filled) thin aluminium frame which is
powder coated in black to match the black and white theme of the my building

Surfaces: Exterior Materials (Building envelope)

Surfaces: Interior Materials

Galvanised Steel or Zinc Panels

These panels are bolted to the brick wall
behind and serves two function, aesthetics
and extra layer of thermal insulation via
use of trapped air cavity.

English or Stretcher Bond Brick wall

This serves as the external leaf and main
protection from the elements. The choice
of brick layout is merely cosmetic only.

Visual Aids

-Taghi Amirhosseini (NTU Lecturer)

-Gavin Richards (NTU Senior Lecturer)

Humans are visual creatures who find it quicker and easier to understand something when it is in a visual format rather than text.
Understanding this is the core of architecture: to communicate the ideas to others.

Sometimes having images describes and communicates the idea across more efficiently than conventional paragraphs
of text.
In this section there are images with annotations to help express my ideas more efficiently than just words.
