Capstone Project: Part I Proposal

EDTC 6332 Practicum in Educational Technology

Performance Problem
New employees at a local income tax preparation firm need to use a web based software
program called Simple Tax Services to prepare clients income tax statements for the
current tax year. The online-based software allows all employees to enter clients data
from any computer in the office and helps them to accurately prepare the clients
statements while the data is stored online in the softwares cloud. Employees at the firm
are familiar with the tax laws and other software for tax preparation such as Tax Act,
Drake, and Tax Slayer but are not familiar with the new software. Due to the firms
integration of the new software all employees must acquire the new skills and knowledge
to login and navigate the new software to complete tax preparation for current and new
clients. At the moment there are no web-based training modules that allow employees to
learn how to login in the system, add new clients demographics, selecting clients filing
status, add clients dependents, and add clients W2s. This will cause problems for the
employees, as they will not function successfully as they will lack the skills to complete
returns in an efficient and effective way with accuracy. All 5 employees at, De Rayo
Income Tax Service, must posses these skills to accurately complete returns for all clients
during tax season.
Viable Solution
Solution 1
All employees at the tax firm will have access to video modules that will be created using
Screen-O-Matic and other Web 2.0 tools for the different procedures and skills that they
need to learn and master in order to be successful. The video modules will be embedded
into a Weebly.com webpage that the firms trainer will create for the employees to access.
All employees will start reviewing videos from the beginning of the modules and review
as many times as needed. The modules will be accessible to all employees from any
computer that has Internet access. Learners that need a refresher can always view and
review the videos to master the skill.

Employees will get a step-by-step guide with screen shots that will allow them to visually
learn the steps necessary to complete the tasks. The guide will allow employees to view
and review the steps.

years experience, and I am
familiar with teaching
strategies. I also have used
Screen-O-Matic and
Weebly.com to create other
interactive lessons. I know
how to create lessons on
Weebly.com and can embed
videos and other resources
to enhance the lesson.
Learners will be able to
access all lessons anywhere
and at anytime.
When creating the video
modules, there needs to be
good Internet connection
and I need to have a script
in order to have better
narration. I tend to have to
re record because of
Internet connection
malfunction or errors.

because it is online and web
based. The training will
allow learners to see
examples of the skills
because there will be videos
to see the examples.

I decide to choose solution 1 because the learners will have

own pace and can review each module as many times as
they want. The videos can be paused to clearly see
examples and can be rewind to repeat examples. The
videos will be embedded in Weebly.com page. The videos
will be narrated and there will be detailed step-by-step
guides that the learners can always review for better
understanding.

Deliverables
Please describe your deliverables. What does the final project look like? What is the final
project made up of?
The deliverables in this project will be a web page created for training with embedded
videos using Screen-O-Matic. Each video will be a step-by-step guide that is narrated and
shows with detail the skills that need to be learned to easily navigate through the web
based Simple Tax Software. The videos will show how to log in, add a new client, enter
demographics, choose filing status, and enter w2s into the system. The page will have a
menu with links to different videos allowing them to review only the lessons they lack
mastering. The written instructional guide will be accessible to learners for reference and
to help them master the instructional unit. The final project will be accessible through a
Weebly.com and all learners will have access to the videos and instructional guide.

Employees at the tax firm will be able to demonstrate knowledge in creating a new
clients profile in the web based Simple Tax Software. The learners will correctly log in
and enter new clients demographic information, add the filing status, add their
dependents demographics, and add their W2s information for correct computing of the
current tax owed.
