WELCOME

to the
2014 MADE CLEAR
Climate Science Academy
Dear Climate Science Academy participant,
On behalf of the entire MADE CLEAR project team, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 MADE CLEAR
Climate Science Academy! We are very appreciative of your participation, and trust you will find the activities and
discussion planned for the Summer Program and Follow-up Sessions rewarding and engaging. Our team has
worked very hard to ensure you will leave the Academy energized and more prepared to contribute to ongoing
discussions of climate change and the Next Generation Science Standards.
The 2014 National Climate Assessment documents strong evidence that rapid climate change is occurring and is
mostly attributed to human activities during the last half-century. Impacts of climate change are already evident:
global temperatures and sea level are rising and climate change is threatening human health and well-being in a
variety of ways. Your students will be faced with engineering and environmental challenges requiring multifaceted
solutions and societal repercussions that are nothing short of daunting. With your participation and leadership,
we can work to ensure they are able to understand the science, evaluate their options, and secure their future.
We are not without solutions if we can prepare the next generation.
Attached to this e-mail are several documents pertinent to your participation in the Academy. Please read
through the information and sign/return the various forms as indicated on the checklist. Included are directions to
the Virden Retreat Center, in Lewes, Delaware, some packing suggestions, and paperwork required to process
your stipend and/or travel reimbursement following the Academy. As indicated in the Academy application
material, members of our team are studying the effectiveness of our professional development activities and of
different approaches to introducing climate change in the classroom. Related to this, we will be asking you to sign
a consent form on site at Lewes.
Please start your registration process by completing the form available through the link below. Help us out by
doing this by noon on Friday, June 13. Again, refer to the attached checklist for other required forms and due
dates.
Climate Science Academy Registration Form
We look forward to working with and learning from you during the Academy. Remember that the Climate Science
Academy involves both the Summer Program and six Follow-up Sessions. Dates for the Follow-up Sessions will be
announced during the Summer Program. Stipends for the Follow-up Sessions will be paid in January 2015 for fall
semester participation and May 2015 for spring semester participation.
If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.
