Review
2.1 Plants and Animal Cells

Know the points of the cell theory

Know the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Know what organelles are
o Know the names and functions of organelles and be able to identify them in
diagram of a plant or animal cell

2.3 The Importance of Cell Division

Know the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction

Know the reasons purposes of cells division
Know why cell size is limited (diffusion, surface area vs. volume)

2.5 The Cell Cycle

Know the different stages of the cell cycle

Know the different stages of mitosis and be able to draw a labeled sketch of the stages or
recognize a sketch of each stage

2.7 Cell Division Going Wrong: Cancer

Know the definition of cancer

Understand the terms tumour, benign, malignant, metastasis
Know what causes cancer (what role does DNA play?)
o Understand how genetic factors and environmental factors can lead to cancer
Know some examples of tests for different types of cancers
What is a biopsy
Know the basics of the three main treatments for cancer (surgery, chemotherapy, and
radiation)

2.9 Specialized Cells

Understand the advantage to an organism of having specialized cells and know a few
examples of specialized cell types

3.1 The Hierarchy of Structure in Animals

Know the hierarchy of structure in animals (cells tissues organs etc.) and a brief
description of each term

3.2 Stem Cells and Cellular Differentiation

Understand the terms stem cell and cellular differentiation and associated diagram

3.3 The Digestive System

Know the basic function of the digestive system

Know the different structures of the human digestive system and their function
Be able to identify the above structures on a diagram
Know the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion
Know how surface area is maximized in the digestive system and why this is important

3.4 The Circulatory System

Know the basic function of the circulatory system

Know the four components of blood and the function of each
Know the different kinds of blood vessels and the unique features of each (eg. veins carry
blood back towards the heart and contain one-way valves to prevent the backflow of
blood)
Know the labeled diagram of the heart and the path of blood flow through the heart and
the body

3.5 The Respiratory System

Know the basic function of the respiratory system

Know the different structures of the human respiratory system and their function
Be able to identify the above structures on a diagram
Know how capillaries and alveoli work together to exchange O2 and CO2
Know how surface area is maximized in the respiratory system and why this is important
