As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

Describe the major places that Australians fought at during World War I.
Understand the major battles that took place during World War I.

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

Prepare Prezi presentation on the places and


battles of World War I.
Make sure that the projector is working for
Googledocs, Prezi and other ICT.
Make sure that there are 20 working computers.
Prepare answers to the question and quiz sheet.

Provision for students at educational risk:

Students with any hearing or eyesight


disabilities need to be at the front.
Any students that are new to ICT will require
extra attention and explanation. These
students will need to be monitored based on
each students previous knowledge and ability
with ICT.

Instruct the students to put their bags on the ground and follow me
out of the class.
- Game to show the class the dangers of World War I to Australian
lives. Step outside the classroom, or walk to the school oval to get
a 20 metre stretch of space. Have everyone line up shoulder to
shoulder. When you say walk, they walk one step forward. In a 30person class the teacher will tap one student each step, randomly.
After walking the 20 metres there will be 3-5 students still standing.
This reflects the percentage of deaths that occurred on the first day
of the Battle of the Somme, where between 60,000 and 80,000
men died.
- Walk back to class and get students to sit down.

Bill to briefly introduce WW1 and highlight places of 5 major battles


of WW1 using a map displayed on a Prezi.
- The battle of Gallipoli
- The battle of Verdun
- The battle of Cambrai
- The battle of The Somme
- The battle of Frommelles
Ollie to split class into 5 groups and explain Web Quest Questions:
Ollie to direct students to Google Docs Link which contains the
questions:
Each group will get one battle that they will research so that they
can answer the following questions (using Symbaloo):
1. What date was the battle and how long did it last?
2. What countries participated in the battle?
3. How many soldiers died in the battle?
4. Is the battle celebrated/remembered today by any
Country? If so, where and on what date?
5. What started the battle? (Who, why and what event/s
proceeded this battle?)

Explain to students that each group is to complete the table on the


battle they have been assigned.
Tim: Will assign groups into the 5 battles. Take students to


Symbaloo webpage:

Allow about: 10 mins working:


Tim: Stop class and ask then assign each group to a different
battle and ask them to use the Google Docs document and the
Symbaloo webpages to check their peers work.
Allow about 5 mins working
Ollie stop work show students how to save the document to the
desktop can email it to themselves etc. explain importance that
they now have a document with information on all 5 battles.
Bill ask students to provide reflection by going to TitanPad link:

- To check that students took the knowledge in, have a 10-minute


quiz; with 10 questions on it with varying battles to check students
took in the wide range of answers and content.
- Hand quiz paper to another person to check answers

- End class. Wish students a good day and assign 20 minutes of


reading in preparation for tomorrows lesson on Gallipoli.

We will be looking over the answers from the web quest and the
quiz, to see if students know the information from the lesson.
