PROJECT PROPOSAL
Guidance:
For your Project Proposal, you must provide an outline brief of your Final Major Project. Where the
brief is set by your tutor, or where you are working on a group brief (with other Learners), please make
sure that you cover how you will respond individually to the brief and/or your individual responsibilities/
contribution to the work of the group.
Your Project Proposal must be produced as a focused outline brief:
Section 1:
i.
Working Title or Theme of Final Major Project
Off the Beaten Path is the title of the game as it focuses on an adventurer travelling across many
dangerous environments and venturing Off the beaten path which is a phrase for when someone
travels off the most taken, and often the safest route.
ii.

What you will work towards producing

A tech demo showing one or more working test levels. By a test level I mean a level which test key
aspects of the game, such as friendly and enemy AI, Platforming and combat for example. I plan
having the main character playable and moving, jumping and fighting and basic enemies (such
enemies with only one attack, such as walk to player and swing Sword)
(Guide:150 words)
Section 2:
i.

Ideas and research sources (you must include a short list of research sources and
bibliography texts). This list can be attached as an appendix.

Google Earth for photo of distance landscapes (as I cant travel there myself) and my own photos
for level and landscape design based on more English Landscapes.
YouTube video and tutorials from Unity forums will be used for any video tutorials I need for using
unity and coding the interactive parts of the project.
I may also look up Folk lore and cultural stories to help create characters and enemies and
possibly to also help with the level design.

Section 3:
i.
Media form and technologies

Form No: PP L6
Issue No: 1
Issue Date: January 2003

Adobe Flash and Photoshop for creating animated Sprites and assets, drawn with a Wacom Tablet.
I will be using Unity 5 for the game engine, with Unreal 4 as a possible back up as they are both able
to be used to make a 2D game with parallax scrolling. If music is also made I will be making it using
FL Studio 11 (Fruity Loops).
The skills I will be develop involve animating 2D characters and drawing landscapes with level design
elements as well as using Unity (a game engine). Concept art will also be a key part so I will be
developing in that area too.
ii.

Timescales (an action plan is essential)

Preproduction
Research 05/03/15 12/03/15
Concept Art 05/03/15 02/04/15 (alongside Asset creation so could be working on
concept art until May/ June)
ProductionCharacter Assets 12/03/15 09/04/15
Objects and Level Assets 12/03/15 30/05/15
Animation 12/03/15 05/06/15 (I will update animation over time, so it will start with
place holder animations to put something into the game to test, but towards the end the
animation will be updated and made with a higher quality)
Game Engine/Programming -02/04/15 05/06/15
Music 23/05/15 05/06/15
(Guide: 150 words)
Section 4:
i.
Proposed method of evaluation (how you will review your FMP in critical and analytical
ways self and peer review, tutorials, etc)
I will evaluate my work with self-evaluation and giving it to others and friends for them to
test and evaluate the game and then getting feedback from them on part they enjoyed,
parts they didnt like and if anything didnt work, or anything they would change.
ii.

How the evidence produced relates to the assessment criteria

As Im taking the Artist Pathway I need to show I need to create an interactive project
which highlights my creative skills. With this game being 2D with vector graphics, I am
able to create hand drew graphics through a graphics tablet and then animate in 2D
which I am best at. The game will also need a lot of concept art in the pre-production
which will help with the earlier parts of the assessment.
