Self Evaluations
Having had personal experiences with soap pollution in my local marina, I
was familiar with the results it had on the environment. Collaboratively, we agreed we
wanted to create a soap ad in relation to local pollutants and developed the purpose
and functions of our product (a biodegradable ecofriendly body wash). I proposed the
idea of the skinny dipper, photoshopped the images, developed the slogan and wrote
the bottom text.

Message:
The advertisement we created is for a body wash that is environmentally
friendly, specifically with regard to water quality. Detergents (the active ingredient in
soap) have a number of adverse effects on water quality. Triclosan is an ingredient in
many soaps, toothpaste, and other beauty products. When exposed to sunlight, Triclosan releases dioxins, which are known carcinogens. Recent studies by the University of
Minnesota have shown that, Triclosan levels in freshwater are increasing exponentially. In addition to containing Triclosan, detergents are highly toxic to fish eggs. It only
takes 5ppm of detergent to start killing fish eggs, and only 15ppm to start killing adult
fish. Our advertisement seeks to humorously highlight some serious problems with the
soap industry. The need for bio-friendly body washes is real and, while our ad is
tongue-in-cheek, real soap companies would do well to start offering environmentally
friendly alternatives for customers.

Our competitors use

(Parts per million) causing fish to die, and
concentrations as small
as 5 PPM can kill fish
eggs!
