My Speech
My name is Jordin Walls. The purpose of this project is explaining and demonstrating
the knowledge I have about the Anti-Apartheid movement and my local movement
Chatt. Apartheid started in South Africa. The Anti-Apartheid movement was created to
have equal rights and make the government more fair to people of color. My local
movement Chatt was founded in San Francisco California, and Chatt was started about
two years ago. Chatts main goal is to make survivors out of victims. People can make a
change by having courage and spreading the message that is true which is this case is
Enough is Enough.
The problem that both these two movements had was internalized inferiority. The
problem Anti-Apartheid felt was unjust was the government system and how it treated
blacks unfairly which included unfair poverty wages. Apartheid also included the Land
Act which took the land from blacks. The problem for my local movement Chatt is
women that are abused feel that they MUST be silenced and never speak up.
To gain power you MUST gain allies because when you're trying to build a
movement that everyone might not agree with it's smart to have allies. Gaining allies
was a strategy in the Anti-Apartheid movement when Africans had the Defiance
Campaign gathered everyone together in the town of Bloemfontein to form and gain a
stronger message. Gaining allies is used in the Chatt group when they are protesting

and bringing more victims into the program it shows how much they want more & more
people to come and stand up for what they believe is to be true. The reason gaining
allies was and is more effective was because people are actually believing their
movement. By teaching other people they are showing their belief in their movement.
Courage, awareness, strength, and hope is what Anti-Apartheid and Chatt
required. We see the need for courage in the Anti-Apartheid movement when many
leaders had to protest in white land areas knowing they were in danger and had risky
tasks. We see the need for hope in the Chatt group movement because mainly victims
that are now survivors had to have a lot of hope and actually believe that their
movement would work.
My views changed throughout the project by knowing a little more about my two
movements and how it can impact my daily life and others around me. Studying about
Chatt makes me think there's some kind of empowerment in the group because the
workers dont make victims out of survivors. The survivors help themselves. My
personal qualities are self-confidence and knowing what I want isnt a problem for me.
nothing will ever get done if were all silent.
