One Computer/One Project Plan: Interesting Insects and their Interesting Life

Cycle
Name: Chloe Corley
Date(s) of Lesson: March 24, 2015
Content Standards:
Students will make predictions and collect data about insects through individual thinking
and internet research that will be transferred into a table via Microsoft word.
ISTE-T standards:
2c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and
peers using a variety of digital age media and formats
4c. c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
Knowledge and Skills:
Students will demonstrate: 1. evaluation skills through confirming or deferring early
predictions via internet research. 2. Data collection through rotation stations with
information related to chosen insect. 3. Collaboration as students will be paired in groups
to collect data.
Learner Background:
Students have been learning about the life cycle and using their knowledge of cells and
reproduction can relay information about insects. Using the internet to gather information
prior to this lesson, students are familiar with collecting relevant and reliable data.
Students have learned how to create a table, but have not entered information into them
yet. Students will become familiar with this skill through this lesson.
Student Learning Objective(s):
Students will use the internet to collect useful and reliable information that will
contribute to their data collection of specific insects that can be sorted and analyzed into
concise sentences that will be transferred into a table via Microsoft Word.
Assessment:
Mastery of the learning objective will be evaluated through observation of student
production during table rotations and through the final step of presentation.
Put your name in the name section and fill in the box next to your name. To enter a new
name and data, click the tab button in the last filled in box.
Name:

Materials/Resources:
Pencil/Paper
Pictures of 5 insects
One computer w/ Microsoft Office
Projection w/ screen & speakers
Overhead transparencies with pictures of insects
Microscope
Learning Activities:
Initiation:
To whole class: Weve been talking about cells and the life cycles of animals and
so today we are going to focus on insects. Does anyone in here have a favorite
insect? Today you will have the chance to explore some pretty cool insects that
youve probably never heard of before. This can be a really fun time where I let
you all be independent, or I can just stand up here and lecture. What do we have
to do to make this fun? You will get to choose an insect and explore with your
group to collect a lot of data about this insect. Assign each group one of the
insects.
Teacher will: show pictures of insects students will be researching and assign
groups a specific insect.
Lesson Development: Describe how you will develop the lesson, what you will
do to model or guide practice, and the learning activities students will be engaged
in order to gain the key knowledge and skills identified in the student learning
objective(s). (Highlight materials in bold)
Students will be placed in a group of 6 and will rotate through 5 stations with one
station having a computer to do internet research on their insect.
Station 1: Write down your insect and describe its features.
Station 2: Look through the microscope and describe what you see that you did
not notice before.
Station 3: Based on the characteristics of your insect, what type of habitat would
you predict it lives in
Station 4: What types of predators may want your insect. Why?
Station 5: Research 6 facts about your insect using the internet and place your
facts into the table in Microsoft Word. Each student must full in a row.
Closure:

When all groups have finished, I will call each group up one at a time. Each
member must present their data that they entered into the computer. This will be
projected on the screen from the computer.
Now you can see how using the internet can help us gather data to put into table
making it easier for us to present our data. You all made predictions and analyzed
your data to learn more about the life cycle of insects.
