The Economic Crisis in Australia
__________________________________________
For the past couple of years, Australia has
been in an economic crisis. There has been a
price drop on commodity prices and because
of this they could lose 500 billion Australian
1
dollars($3884275000 American dollars).
One of the biggest exports that Australia has
is coal and iron ore. There has recently been
sliding prices of those two exports, and
because of this it is causing an increase in the

One of the main reasons why the

government is in an economic crisis is
because of the mining boom. The mining
boom is when the cost of their mining
resources are being decreased. Since the
prices are getting decreased, they are not
getting enough money that they need. Which
means they are getting into debt. The
companies are decreasing the prices more
and more, then they will eventually run out
of money. This will become a never ending
cycle, and they will keep lowering the prices
for the exports. If they follow through with
this, they are never going to get out of debt.
They will just keep falling deeper and deeper
into it.
The falling prices of the key exports have
caused Tony Abbott, the prime minister of
Australia, to abandon or rework some of the
2
governments budget policy.
The Australian
government is having a hard time trying to
transition into non-mining drivers of growth
2
as their main export.
This would be very

hard for the Australian government to

transition because Australias strongest
export is mining related things. They would
also lose a lot of money because of all of the
equipment that they bought specifically for
mining. 16 Australian owned retailers with a
market capitalization of $100 million are
forecast to post a 8.5% drop in combined
3
revenue.
Australia is in a recession, and the
Australian Banks are resulting to printing
money. They are running out of options, and
it could only get worse in the future. There
are many ways the government could stop
their economic crisis, but they would have to
find a way to do it in a short period of time.

Detention Centers: Good or Bad

for Children?

A boat full of asylum seekers being

encountered

__________________________________________
There are people in this world who want
to escape from their corrupt government
and find asylum in another. These people
are called asylum seekers. To be more
specific, Australia has been going through
situations of asylum seekers trespassing
through their territory from Afghanistan and
Sri Lanka. So far to solve this problem, they
have been stopping the boats in their tracks
and turning them back. They have also been
making police patrol the coast, and when
they encounter a boat of asylum seekers,
they send them into detention centers.

Although they have tried to solve it, the

problem gets even worse; children that are
put into detention centers are experiencing
sexual abuse, and assault. This causes the
poor children to develop mental illness in the
future.
The solution to fix this is children that are
coming into Australia as asylum seekers,
should be sent to a separate detention center
so they are separated from the adults that
could potentially sexually abuse or assault
the children. Over the 15 months to March
2014, there have been 233 accounts of
assault, and 33 reported sexual assaults
against children (unknown if it was caused
by adult inmates or by detention center
1
staff).
Putting children in detention centers
should be the last resort. Instead of putting
the children into unwanted detention
centers, they should put them into an
environment where they could learn, have
fun, and be safe at the same time. By putting
the asylum children into Australia, it could
help the future of the country because the
developing minds of the asylum children
could learn, and maybe make a change in the
Australian community.
One teenager that is locked up on the
Christmas Island said, I dont have any
2
hope. I feel like I will die in detention.

Children are being tortured, and we are not

doing anything about it. Those children are
spending time in camps that are filthy,

unsafe, and unsuitable for children. The

prime minister of Australia, Mr. Abbot, said
that he does not care about what is
3
happening with these children.
He should,
because what is happening is really bad, and
it could affect Australias reputation, and
how people see Australia.
