Twice a week, half the school meets in the gym for a full period. Students line up across the gym
with their classes, ranging from JK - Grade 6. Two teachers and a small group (4-5) of grade 6
students stand in the middle of the room. Half of the the classes line up facing south, staring at the
middle of the room, half facing north, staring at the middle of the room, so that everyone can see
the leaders. Then the teachers and students introduce choreography moves appropriate for all age
levels. The teachers and students then lead the dance of the four simple movement skills to a
song. All of the students follow along and dance the choreography to the song. This is repeated
for four songs in total, giving approximately 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity.
Observed and lead this DPA concept at PDS site.
Play the song and follow the lyrics. The song will instruct students to dance around.
Observed in PDS site
Split the class into two teams. Have each team line up in two even lines facing each other so there
is a path between them. Teams must start at one end of the two lines and throw the ball to each
member of their team across the path. Turn the music on. When the ball reaches the end of the
line, the last student runs with the ball back to the beginning of the line. The object is to see how
many times you can get the ball back to the start before the song ends.
Made it up.
The Shape Song: An interactive song for Kindergarten where students follow the instructions of the
song. Some examples to the song are:
1) Put your body into a triangle (picture being in downward dog position in yoga)
2) Make 3 triangles with your body
3) Stand and stretch tall like a tree
4) Dance in your own way
5) Melt to the ground and stretch
6) Make your body into a tiny square

-Pylons can be used if game is being played outside
-Students who are "out" can jump rope or rotate to another activity (i.e. frisbee or tag).

Students will travel around the activity area in a variety of ways including: walking, running,
skipping, galloping, etc. Call out a letter and have students move around the activity area in the
shape of the letter. Encourage students to be creative and think of a unique pathway to make the
letter (e.g. bubble letters, cursive, capital, and lowercase). Once the students finish making their
letter, have them move around the activity room again. Students could make a series of letters that
spell out frequently used words.

Have students stand in an open area of the classroom. Call out a letter and have students form that
letter by shaping their bodies into letters. Letters that work well are: A, X, S, C, F, J, I, L, U, V, K,
and Z. Encourage students to stretch long and hold the stretch for a count of eight. Have students
work with a partner to each form a different letter and then form a two letter word. In groups of three http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/dpa/pdfs/kto four, have students form their bodies to spell a word.
9_physical_activities.pdf
Body Spelling

From the body spelling bucket a few cards are picked out, which state the type of body spelling to
take place. Some examples are swim spelling, cheer leader spelling, pumping iron spelling. This
exercise is done a few times, and the spelling words are all spelt out following a few of the cards.
Students must be spread out from each other to allow for safe movement. Students will come to
know all the different body spelling ways, but of course the teacher must model each new way
introduced. A quick activity to get our heart rate up and stretch our bodies and minds.

www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/teachers/dpa4-6.pdf
Students sit cross-legged on their desks and throw the ball to each other without speaking. The
teacher can add rules to make the game more interesting, such as "Boy-Girl rule" where students
must pass to the opposite gender, "Funny Face rule" where students have to make a funny face
while they throw, or "Speed Round" where students have to throw quickly. More than one rule can
be added at once and rules can be removed by saying "Rules Off". If students speak, drop the ball,
throw the ball particularly poorly, or break a rule, they sit down.
It's important to emphasize safety with this game. Chairs need to be pushed in and students must
sit cross-legged. If that is an issue, then students can stand in front of their desks, but shouldn't
move from their spot. Students who get out early can be a runner to collect the ball when it's
dropped.

Role Models
Time: 20 minutes
Safety
Remind students to be cautious when moving and to be aware of the personal space of others.
Warm-up
Have students march on the spot, slowly increasing the speed.
Point to one body part at a time, and have students move that body part in a variety of ways. If you
are not pointing to a body part, the
students continue to march in place.
Lead, or have a student lead, a stretching routine
(see Appendix C on page 63 of the 2005 Healthy Schools - Daily Physical Activities Grades 1-3
document for sample stretches).
Activity 1: Active Role Models
Have students move around the activity area demonstrating their favourite physical activity.
Every 45 seconds, call out a new physical activity (e.g., baseball, hockey, basketball, soccer,
football, volleyball, tennis, fast walking, swimming, gymnastics, skiing, dancing).
Have students move around the activity area as they would if they were participating in that activity.
Call out Activate! to have the students go back to doing their own favourite activity.
Have students imitate the movement continuously until the next activity is called.
Activity 2: Birthdays
(Adapted from:Ophea, Keys to Fitness, K3, 1987)
Have students move in a circle or throughout the activity area.
Call out birthday months or seasons, and have students perform an activity in the centre of the
circle when their month or season is called
(e.g., jumping jacks, knee lifts, lunges on each leg, front crawl).
Choose other months or seasons, and vary the activity until all months or seasons have been
called.
Cool-down: Windstorm
Have students walk around slowly pretending they are trees blowing in the wind, using their arms
as branches. Students start in a big
windstorm in which branches break, and finish as the wind stops blowing.
Lead, or have a student lead, a stretching routine (see Appendix C p. 63 for sample stretches).
Variations
Have students add new activities, demonstrating any that are not familiar to the class.

Encourage students to keep moving throughout the activity.

Demonstrate the movement or activity chosen, if necessary.
Discuss with students what types of physical activity they enjoy.
Purpose: Requires teamwork and cooperation, uses thigh muscles
Instructions: Students make a circle while standing, all facing the same direction i.e., all students
have right shoulder facing the inside of the circle. On someones count students will attempt to sit on
the knees of the person behind them. If done correctly, the circle will support itself. The next level of
challenge would be for them to try to take a step forwards while in that position (causing the circle
to rotate), etc.
Management tips: Depending on your class, you may want to designate a girls circle and a boys
circle to make everyone feel more comfortable.
- Remind students to be cautious when moving around the area, and be careful of personal space
- If you are doing this activity in the classroom, ensure there is adequate space for the students to
move around
- Start with a stretching routine
- Then tell the students that everyone is 'it' at the same time
- When you say go, have students tag each other and avoid being tagged by others. If a student
gets tagged, the walk or jog on the spot with their hands on their head until the game is over.
- Stop the game after 60 seconds and start a new game (or once most of the students have been
tagged)
- Remind students to be cautious
- Do not use walls/fences to be stopping points
- Start students by doing stretches
- You are creating 4 fitness areas with 2 physical activities at each (create signs that you can post
near the activity area to remind students what they are doing)
- Activities include: stand up/sit down 15 times and 20 stride jumps; 15 alternate knee lifts and 20
tuck jumps; 15 jumps and 10 heel touches; 15 steps with high knees and 20 toe touches
- Students should be moving between the stations using different forms of locomotion
- Signal to students when they should be moving to the next station
- The activity is over when all students have completed the circuit

Warm-up: student leaders call out an animal, demonstrate how it moves and the rest of the class
imitates the movement (e.g., horse, snake, bunny); repeat with different leaders and encourage
choosing animals that move vigorously; lead (or have student lead) stretching routine
Activity (adapted from Ophea grade 2 support document): form students into four equal groups and
assign each group a colour (using pinnies) as well as a "dog pound" location marked by a pylon; on
cue, students move around pretending to be dogs (e.g., barking); call out colour (e.g., "Yellow
Dogs!") - that group becomes the "dog catchers" and have to tag as many other dogs as possible;
dogs who are tagged return to their dog pound and perform pre-established activity (e.g., stride
jumps, marching, twist jumps) until new colour is called; every time a new colour is called, those in
the dog pound are freed

This is an aerobic activity which gets students outside and engaging in healthy physical activity.
This is a nice way to break up the day, increase their fitness levels, and allow students some much
needed time outside. Research shows that there are many benefits to physical activity, including
motivation for learning, increases in cognitive ability and improved classroom management.

Students will be asked to pause their current classroom learning by using a 5-count and give their
attention to the teacher. A few volunteers will be selected to bring the required equipment (pylons,
pinnies and flags) with them. The whole class will be escorted out of the class to the main field by
the teacher. They will be gathered in a circle around the teacher who will explain and model the
activity for students before dividing them into teams.
Capture the flag has students join two teams, and each team has the objective of capturing the
opposing teams flag(s). The pylons will mark the boundaries of the activity as well as the nets and
jail areas on the field. If a team member is tagged by the opposing team while carrying the flag they
must go to the opposing team's goal and remain their as a prisoner. While they are in prison they
must engage in jumping jacks or high knees until one of their team members rescues them. The
teacher may also call a jail break during the game and all prisoners on both sides are released. The
game is over or it is reset once a side successfully captures the opposing team's flag(s).

Warm-up: varies (e.g., students could start with doing 15 jumping jacks to increase their heart rate
then sit on their desks safely and quietly, until all are seated quietly on their desks and not making
any noise); teacher then quickly has students come up with four or five "punishments" (i.e. physical
exercises) that students may choose from to do if they miss a catch or drop the object during the
activity (e.g., punishments could include: 5 push-ups. 5 sit-ups, 15 jumping jacks, 10 burpies, etc.)
Activity: students take turns silently passing an object (soft ball or animal bean bag) to any other
person in the class who they have made eye contact with and who is prepared to make a good
catch; the purpose of the activity is to develop not only good hand-eye coordination, practice of
throwing and catching, but also to encourage calm and quiet social interaction (it is also a nice form
of relaxation); those who drop the object or fail to catch it when thrown to them must get up, move
to the front of the class and perform a chosen "punishment" before going back to their desks; this
activity can be used as a calm transition to nutrition break or at the end of the school day
Cool-down: according to how the teacher wishes to end the game, he or she could have students
cool-down by simply sitting down (e.g., if they have already done a "punishment" exercise) to watch
the rest of the activity or silently read a book

the movements of the student in the lead. Every 30-45 seconds, blow the whistle so that the
student in the lead goes to the back of the line. Continue until all students have had a chance to be
the leader in their group. Students will play a game of tag called Shadow tag, whereby students can
only "tag" another student by stepping on another person's shadow and shouting "Got You!" Once a
student has been tagged, they must do 5 tuck jumps before they can re-enter the game. If it is not a
sunny day, the teacher should play a different tag game such as toilet tag.
The second tag game is SuperActive Hero Tag, where 2-4 students are "it" and 2-4 students are
"SuperActive Heroes". The "it" students must tag other students, and once a student has been
tagged they are in "jail" and must walk on the spot. The SuperActive Heroes travel around with one
arm in the air like Superman, and they must free the other students by touching them on the
shoulder. To cool down, have students form a circle an pick a leader to choose a stretch that all
students will do. Then they can choose another student to pick a different stretch (might want to tell
them to pick a boy if they are a girl or vice versa, or to pick someone that is wearing a specific
colour to avoid friends picking friends).

Tag games are a great way to get students active because they are tons of fun so students don't
even realize that they are actually getting exercise. The teacher should keep a close eye on
students to ensure they are following the rules and are being safe. If they are being unsafe they
may have to sit out of the game for a while until they can join in properly.
There will be a team of 2-3 people who are called "man trackers"
This team of 2-3 people will be trying to find and tag the "men and women" who are hiding in the

trying to get to before they get tagged by the "man-trackers"
This activity results in plenty of running to get everyones heart beat pumping!
Use the following squatting technique: Knees over ankles, knees don't go past the toes, upper leg
at a 90 angle to the lower leg and parallel to the floor.
Make sure the floor is free of any obstructions.

- Team members must encourage each other, work as a team, and pay close attention so that
he/she knows when their turn is!
- This is an anerobic activity as students have to run short sprints to get to their other line.
- Students get into small groups (3-5 students in each group)
- They get one card per student in their group. The cards each show a picture of a yoga post (i.e.
elephant pose, eagle pose, down dog, etc.)
- The students have to practice their poses together and then create a short synchronized yoga
dance to share with the class.
- This activity can be played in the gym or even on the carpet in a classroom.
- The goal is for students to be creative, try the poses to the best of their ability and be as in sync
with their teammates as possible!

When the students are restless or have been working for a long time without a break, instruct them
to stop, push in their chairs and find a place in the classroom where they are far enough away from
their peers that they can't touch one another. Once they are settled and ready (make sure they are
quiet and listening, you can play quiet music if you choose, especially for the younger students)
instruct them in simple yoga poses and stretches. This helps them stretch and take a breath while

Have students do a variety of fitness activities for 30 second intervals:
- Jumping Jacks
- Running on the spot
- Hop on one foot
- squat jumps
Remind students to be aware of their classmate's personal space to be careful when moving
around.
-Give every student in the class a letter. You may either provide them with a letter card so they
don't forget, or have them remember their letter.
-Call out a word (may use words of the week/high-frequency words) or a series of letters. Students
with those letters in that word are "it."
-When a student tags another student, that student is also "it" and has to tag other students.
-Call out a variety of words so that all students get the chance of participating in the different roles.
-Call out "alphabet" in between words, where students will move around in the play area, using a
variety of movements, waiting for the next word to be called.
- Have students find an open space in the classroom
- Call out a letter at a time, and have students form that letter with their bodies and to hold that
position for a minimum of 8 seconds.
- Encourage students to stretch long
- Then, have students work with a partner and each student will shape a letter that will form a twoletter word.
- Then, in a larger group have students shape their bodies to spell a longer word.
In an open area either inside or outside, post instructional posters on the wall. Posters will include
the proper steps to performing the activity for each center. Centers can include skipping, performing
planks/sit ups/push ups (with or without exercise balls), running on the spot, balancing on exercise
balls, lifting weights, using a hula hoop etc.

Idea came from my AT at my PDS

Under each poster, provide the necessary equipment for the activity. Also provide a floor mat for
students to stand on. This ensures that they have a safe play to perform their activity (especially if
the activity involves ground work like planks or sit ups) and also shows the student where each
activity is to take place.

Students will be split into small groups and will rotate around the stations. Give students a time limit
at each station (approx. 5 mins). When time is up, have all students rotate one station. Groups stay
together as they rotate. Providing the direction of rotation at the beginning of the class limits
confusion. Having the posters numbered may help as well (If you are at poster 3, move to poster 4).
For high-activity stations (skipping/hula hoops) place the posters far enough away from the other
stations so that the equipment will not interfere with other students. Since these stations don't
require floor mats, taping a square for students to stay inside may be a good idea.
If performing centers inside, remind students to be aware of other people who may be in the area. If

in the main hallway at all times.
This activity allows students to get up and moving after they have been sitting for an extended
period of time (e.g. during lesson transitions, following an assembly).
In both of the classrooms in which I have observed this particular activity, the teacher has had the
students stand and find a place in the room where they can safely participate in the activity.
Students are reminded to keep about an arms length distance between themselves and their
classmates. The teacher also reminds students to be aware of their environment (e.g. students are
reminded to keep a safe distance between themselves and any furniture in the classroom such as
desks, chairs, storage and/or shelf units, etc.).
After each of the students have found an appropriate place in the classroom (an area that allows
them to move freely and safely) the teacher will then begin the activity. The activity itself is
displayed on the whiteboard in the classroom (either through BrightLinks or SMART technology).
The activity itself involves a synchronized dance (performed by 3 children) which the students then
try to follow and imitate. As the activity is dance-based, it also involves the use of music. The
teacher should make a point to play the video at a volume that is appropriate (the volume should be
loud enough so that the students in the class can hear it, but also at a level that takes into account
any surrounding classrooms).

In Mission Impossible tag, the game involves students using noodles to tag one another in the back
before someone tags them. Once that person is tagged, the tagged player must sit down. They can
stand back up once the person that tagged them gets tagged. The purpose of this activity is to have
students run around, and strategize ways to eliminate others in the game while protecting
themselves from getting tagged. To effectively manage this activity, you would want to clearly
establish the rules and game play. As a supervisor you can participate in this activity, but you must
be willing to deal with discrepancies that arise.

This is a form of tag. Each student will be given 2 clothes pins that are to be placed on their shirt.
The objective of the game is for the students to try and take another person's clothes pin. If you
succeed in taking someone else's clothes pin, you put it on your clothing. If all of your clothes pins
have been taken, you are not out of the game but continue to take the clothes pins of others.
Management tips:
-set boundaries when outside as to where the students can run
