Students are divided into teams, some teammates protect their hula hoop (flag), while other
teammates play an offensive position to try and capture the other teams bean bag (flag) without
being touched by an opposing player. If they are touched by an opponent, they must sit down and
wait to be rescued by a teammate. The team with the most bean bags at the end of the predetermined time period wins.

We will play the game "Dance Detective", a simple DPA classroom activity. One student will go into
the hall and stay there until the class is ready. For the rest of the students in the class, one student
will be chosen to be the leader. The leader will choose what moves the rest of the class will do, and
they will follow these dance moves. They will change when they feel like and the "detective", who
was out in the hall, is trying to guess who the leader is. We will ensure students all are an arms
length away, the space is clear and are wearing shoes.

Twice a week, half the school meets in the gym for a full period. Students line up across the gym
with their classes, ranging from JK - Grade 6. Two teachers and a small group (4-5) of grade 6
students stand in the middle of the room. Half of the the classes line up facing south, staring at the
middle of the room, half facing north, staring at the middle of the room, so that everyone can see
the leaders. Then the teachers and students introduce choreography moves appropriate for all age
levels. The teachers and students then lead the dance of the four simple movement skills to a
song. All of the students follow along and dance the choreography to the song. This is repeated
for four songs in total, giving approximately 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity.

Split the class into two teams. Have each team line up in two even lines facing each other so there
is a path between them. Teams must start at one end of the two lines and throw the ball to each
member of their team across the path. Turn the music on. When the ball reaches the end of the
line, the last student runs with the ball back to the beginning of the line. The object is to see how
many times you can get the ball back to the start before the song ends.

Body Spelling
From the body spelling bucket a few cards are picked out, which state the type of body spelling to
take place. Some examples are swim spelling, cheer leader spelling, pumping iron spelling. This
exercise is done a few times, and the spelling words are all spelt out following a few of the cards.
Students must be spread out from each other to allow for safe movement. Students will come to
know all the different body spelling ways, but of course the teacher must model each new way
introduced. A quick activity to get our heart rate up and stretch our bodies and minds.

This is a nice way to break up the day, increase their fitness levels, and allow students some much
needed time outside. Research shows that there are many benefits to physical activity, including
motivation for learning, increases in cognitive ability and improved classroom management.

Title
Students will be asked to pause their current classroom learning by using a 5-count and give their
attention to the teacher. A few volunteers will be selected to bring the required equipment (pylons,
pinnies and flags) with them. The whole class will be escorted out of the class to the main field by
the teacher. They will be gathered in a circle around the teacher who will explain and model the
activity for students before dividing them into teams.
Capture the flag has students join two teams, and each team has the objective of capturing the
opposing teams flag(s). The pylons will mark the boundaries of the activity as well as the nets and
jail areas on the field. If a team member is tagged by the opposing team while carrying the flag they
must go to the opposing team's goal and remain their as a prisoner. While they are in prison they
must engage in jumping jacks or high knees until one of their team members rescues them. The
teacher may also call a jail break during the game and all prisoners on both sides are released. The
game is over or it is reset once a side successfully captures the opposing team's flag(s).

Play Follow the Leader in groups of 3-6, with students travelling through the activity area, copying
the movements of the student in the lead. Every 30-45 seconds, blow the whistle so that the
student in the lead goes to the back of the line. Continue until all students have had a chance to be
the leader in their group. Students will play a game of tag called Shadow tag, whereby students can
only "tag" another student by stepping on another person's shadow and shouting "Got You!" Once a
student has been tagged, they must do 5 tuck jumps before they can re-enter the game. If it is not a
sunny day, the teacher should play a different tag game such as toilet tag.
The second tag game is SuperActive Hero Tag, where 2-4 students are "it" and 2-4 students are
"SuperActive Heroes". The "it" students must tag other students, and once a student has been
tagged they are in "jail" and must walk on the spot. The SuperActive Heroes travel around with one
arm in the air like Superman, and they must free the other students by touching them on the
shoulder. To cool down, have students form a circle an pick a leader to choose a stretch that all
students will do. Then they can choose another student to pick a different stretch (might want to tell
them to pick a boy if they are a girl or vice versa, or to pick someone that is wearing a specific
colour to avoid friends picking friends).

Tag games are a great way to get students active because they are tons of fun so students don't
even realize that they are actually getting exercise. The teacher should keep a close eye on
students to ensure they are following the rules and are being safe. If they are being unsafe they
may have to sit out of the game for a while until they can join in properly.
There will be a team of 2-3 people who are called "man trackers"
This team of 2-3 people will be trying to find and tag the "men and women" who are hiding in the
naturalized area. Once the team of 2-3 trackers has counted to 50, they will call out " begin"
signalling the the hunt has begun. There will be a pre-chosen spot that the people in hiding will be
trying to get to before they get tagged by the "man-trackers"
This activity results in plenty of running to get everyones heart beat pumping!
Use the following squatting technique: Knees over ankles, knees don't go past the toes, upper leg

I have noticed that when my school has a lot of indoor recesses, the HPE teacher has inventive

them to move freely and safely) the teacher will then begin the activity. The activity itself is
displayed on the whiteboard in the classroom (either through BrightLinks or SMART technology).
The activity itself involves a synchronized dance (performed by 3 children) which the students then
try to follow and imitate. As the activity is dance-based, it also involves the use of music. The
teacher should make a point to play the video at a volume that is appropriate (the volume should be
loud enough so that the students in the class can hear it, but also at a level that takes into account
any surrounding classrooms).

Instructions
The purpose of the activity is to move through the activity area using a variety of locomotor
movements following an identified leader. The leader can be changed when the music stops or
after a specified period of time using a signal such as a whistle. The change could follow a
particular order (e.g., alphabetical by first name, in order of height, etc.). The leader could carry a
baton or other object (eg. wear a hat) to identify them as the leader.
Children follow the leader in a line to move forward or backward or the leader can stand at the front
of the room and children can be stationery.
Give 3 or 4 "taggers" a toilet brush.
1. Taggers try to tag free players with toilet brush below the neck.
2. If tagged, players become a toilet by squatting on one knee with same side hand raised for
"flushing" purposes.
3. To be freed, a free player must push the "toilet's" hand down to "flush."
4. Toilets make a flushing noise, turn in a circle once and then are free. Those who free the toilets
several clean "wash their hands" until toilet finishes "flushing" and both are available for tagging again.
