Lesson #6

ED 321 Self-Assessment (Please number each self assessment)

Planning and Preparation (AEA: Conceptualization, DiagnosisWTS: 1,7DISP: Respect Responsibility)
Explain and defend the decisions you made in choosing your objectives and the
assessment tools/strategies for this lesson. Even if the lesson was given to you to teach,
you must consider the effectiveness of the objectives and assessments.
The objective for this lesson was students will be able to compare standard units of
measurements between inches, feet, yards, and miles. Again, my cooperating teacher is
trying to prepare the students for the MAPS test coming up. This material is a review for
the students, but from 6th grade not 7th. During this lesson my assessment was a game,
and I observed whether the students were answering the game questions correctly or not.
Classroom Environment (AEA: Coordination, Integrative InteractionWTS: 2,3,5DISP: Respect,
Responsibility)

What were the discipline issues that presented themselves during the teaching of this
lesson? How did you anticipate these and handle them?
I had the students play a game during this lesson. I was nervous that it would get too
intense, or too crazy. In order to control this, I made sure to set high, explicit
explanations for the students. I again used the PBIS model that all the students are
familiar with (be responsible, be respectful, be safe). I also explained that if they do not
bring their attention back after I have asked them , the game will be shut down, and they
can just work on worksheets for the remaining time.
Instruction (AEA: Communication, Coordination, Diagnosis, Integrative InteractionWTS: 2,3,4,5,6,7DISP:
Respect Responsibility), Assessment (AEA: Diagnosis, Integrative InteractionWTS: 8,9DISP: Respect,
Reflection), Professional Responsibilities (AEA: Communication, Integrative InteractionWTS: 10DISP:
Collaboration, Communication)

After teaching the lesson and analyzing student work, describe how your decisions
impacted student learning. How do you know? How well did your assessment connect to
the lesson objectives? Are there changes you would make or things you could have done
differently?
My decision to have them take notes and follow along to learn the topic was very
effective. The notes gave them the opportunity to look back to key notes in order to
figure out a problem. I know students did do this because I saw some looking back to
answer a question presented. My assessment of having the game helped me know
whether they got the objective. I know middle school students like competition; therefore

they all were actively engaged in the learning. Also, the game allowed me to see which
groups were getting the right answers consistently and wrong ones consistently. If I was
to do the lesson differently, I would change one thing done during the note taking
process. I would have had the students think of concrete items that are measured in
inches, feet, yards and miles. I had it in my lesson plan, but did not execute it, but I
believe executing it would have helped them visualize the size of each measurement.
Consider student learning as you reflect on your teaching of this lesson. Explain how the
evidence you obtained in your lesson (assessment) demonstrated the degree to which all
students achieved your objectives.
My assessment allowed me to see they understood the lesson to a high degree. There was a
moment that many students were coming up with answers that had decimals, and I had to take
the time to teach them that the decimal was an incorrect answer. My assessment helped me
realize students were doing that, and helped me realize I need to reteach a section. After
reteaching that point, many students were getting the correct answer consistently.
Professional Responsibilities (AEA: Communication, Integrative InteractionWTS: 10DISP:
Collaboration, Communication)

Explain how you incorporated feedback from your cooperating teacher and supervisor, if
applicable, to the planning/teaching of this lesson. What decisions did you make based on
feedback received?
In previous lessons, my cooperating teacher had told me to check for understanding
before moving on with notes. Therefore for this lesson, I made sure to have the students
tell me when it was okay to move on. I had them hold up their pencils when they were
done with the note and I was able to move on.
