Melting Icebergs
As I was skimming along the Internet, I came across an image that happened to capture
my eye. I looked at this image and I wondered to myself, the icicles are formed into skyscrapers
of around the world. I couldnt understand why they were melting above an ocean. As I
conducted more research, the title to this advertisement was Melting Icebergs Lead to Sinking
Skylines to raise awareness of important causes such as global warming.
Vinay Saya and Siddarth Basavaraj use Photoshop to create a skyline within the icicles.
The authors purpose was to bring the campaign closer to home to allow viewers to recognize the
message and take into effect quick. In an article with Sophie Cordell, Vinay mentioned At one
point global warming was the main topic in the news and a topic that people spoke a lot about.
I don't really hear anything about it anymore, so creating the advert with, my colleague Siddarth,
was really an eye opening experience. We wanted people to know that there are others out there
still making awareness about global warming and also creating really intriguing adverts about it
(BlogSpot par 1).
Since long ago, climate change has become to be a scientific curiosity and is no longer
just one of many environmental concerns. As the United Nations Secretary General said, It is
the major, overriding environmental issue of our time, and the single greatest challenge facing
environmental regulators. It is a growing crisis with economic, health and safety, food
production, security, and other dimensions (UNEP par 1).

Shifting weather patterns, for example, threaten food production through increased
unpredictability of precipitation. Rising sea levels contaminate coastal freshwater reserves and
increase the risk of catastrophic flooding. A warming atmosphere aids the spread of pests and
diseases to the tropics.
The advertisement brand: United Nations Environment Program released this ad June
2014 in India when they realized the news is continuing to get worse. Glaciers and ice sheets
have continued to be a loss. According to UNEP, the second straight year with an ice-free
passage through Canadas Arctic islands, and accelerating rates of ice-loss from ice sheets in
Greenland and Antarctica (UNEP par 3). Warm water occupies more volume than coldthe
melting of ice sheets and glaciers around the world is contributing to rates and an ultimate extent
of sea-level rise that could far out due the anticipated and recent global scientific evaluation.
There is alarming evidence that is leading to irreversible changes in ecosystems and may
have already been reached or passed. Ecosystems diverse as the Mountain glaciers are in an
alarming reserve and the downstream effects of reduced water supply in the driest months will
have consequences that will continue on to next generations.
In conclusion, greenhouse warming is real and has never been more present. Dangerous
climate changes may still be avoided if we can transform our hydrocarbon energy systems.
UNEP offers a wide range of tools and resources on climate change to assist everyone, from
households and students to scientists and governments. The tools are available but they must be
applied immediately and aggressively.
