About Buy From the Backyard

In 2007, Sen. Tom Libous and senior staffers were looking to help farmers in
Broome, Tioga and Chenango counties grow their crops, markets and the economy.
Down the hall, a junior staffer was trying to find all the ways he could put local
food on the table for his family.
They got together and asked: Could they create an entire meal soup to nuts
from food produced only in the 52nd District Broome, Tioga and Chenango counties?
After a bit of field research and a good deal of recipe trading, the sticking point
wasnt whether it could be done, but what the menu should be.
Since that first meal, Sen. Libous has sponsored the Buy From the Backyard Act
to bring local foods to state institutions, advocated for more local foods in schools, and
encouraged everyone to find out the value of buying locally produced food.
Not everyone shops at farmers markets or has a farm stand. Important issues
remain on the path to increased agribusiness, but lets solve that one meal at a time.
