Table Ball
Source: Natasha Pokorny of Nesconset Nursing Center on January 31, 2000
Equipment: Tables that are able to line up together and a ball preferably a bright
color.
Size: 10-20
Objective: The objective of Table Ball is to improved hand eye coordination,
socialization, attention span, following of simple directions.
Description: Place tables end to end, enough to fit about 10 or more people all the
way around. Place the ball in front of one of the residents and tell him/her to roll it
to someone else at the table. Encourage each resident to keep the ball moving on
the table. It should be natural for them. This activity is recommended for
Alzheimer's. Alzheimer residents in my facility can play this game for about an hour
before getting worn-out.
Leadership Considerations: Not all Alzheimer clients can participate depending on
what stage of Dementia they have. Facilitators can place those more capable next
to someone who might be having a difficulty time and encourage them to help each
other and increase the socialization. Also for the clients that have experience
strokes instead of using a normal size ball, have them use a larger blown up ball so
they could have the choice of rolling or tossing the ball. This way they are able to
work on their hand eye coordination, balance and coordination.
