Almeidasresearchaboutcopingmechanismsdoesnotfocusonpreventingstress,butit
doesfocusonfindingwaystocontrolstress.
Mymoneyisonphysicalactivity,Dr.Almeidasaid.Ourbodieshaveevolvedso
whenwefaceachallengeandourcortisolraises,ourresponseshouldbetoreleasethat
energy.
Cortisolisthehormoneresponsibleforenergychanges,Almeidaexplained.Itregulates
bodilyfunctionsrangingfromglucoseproduction,toheartrateandbloodpressure
changes.Exerciseisahealthystressorthatreleasesenergyasitregulatesandlowers
cortisollevels,hesaid.
KatherineBrooks,aUTvolleyballplayerandjuniorjournalismstudent,saidsheknows
theeffectsofstressalltoowell.
It'salmostironic,Brookssaid.Therigorousschedulesurroundingmysportcanbea
hugesourceofstress,butatthesametimeactuallyplayingisdefinitelymybiggeststress
reliever.
ThewayBrooksfindsstressrelieforhowsomeonereactstostressiscalledstress
reactivity.
Stressreactivityyouwoulddefineasthepercentagechangeinamarkerofstress
suchashormonalresponse,ormoodresponse,whateveritis,duringastressfulevent,

Almeidasresearchshowsthatexercisenotonlyservesasadistractionfromstress,but
alsothatpeoplewhoexerciseseemtohavelowerlevelsofcortisolondaystheyexercise
versusdaystheydont.
