Task one

Tense
The story is going to be written in the present, this is so people can connect to
the characters more and so when something bad happens to them they will not
have known about it before, so it will surprise them more. I will write it as a story
with the character Persephone narrating the story if I need sections of narration.
Narrator
This person will be talking in first person. Everyone will be talking in first person
but if I need people to explain a bit more about the situation then I will get
Persephone to do it as she is the one that the story is mainly about.

The reasons for the seasons

Script

Scene one, location - ext. Time of day morning.

Start the drama of Demeter and her daughter are playing in a field,
it is the time of year that we call summer at this point but at the
moment this has not been created, the story about why they now exist
is about to begin.
Sound effects laughing, chirping birds, a soft breeze.

DEMETER
Persephone, Persephone. There you
are, come on get out of the
nettles. I have to go for an hour,
I want you to promise me that you
will not leave.
PERSEPHONE
I will mother, just like I always
do, I shall pick a basket of
apples over there in the orchard
until you return, is that ok.
DEMETER
Yes, you always are a good girl.

Sound effects - Sounds of twigs breaking to give the idea of someone

walking away.

Scene two, location inside. Time of day no time of day, the

underworld has none.
Demeter walks of and Persephone walks towards an apple tree. We get
to a new scene, we are in the underworld, and hades is sat at his
throne board of everything.
Sound effects, we can hear screaming and sounds of death in the
background. A volcano/ eruption in the background. These start to
fade to give us the imprecation that we are nearby but not right by
them sounds.
HADES
Slave.

Sound effects we hear footsteps nearing us, they are fast ones and
also heavy breathing.
HADES
There you are, what took you so
long, its not as if you have a
life, ha, I forgot you dont have
one, now hurry up and fetch my
horses.
Sound effects we hear the footsteps running away again and the
heavy breathing quietens down. We here heavy footsteps now and the
rustle of clothing/ a cape as hades walks of. The screaming from
before comes back.
HADES
Cerberus,
Sound effects - We here the dogs bark in almost unison, a plea to
their master for finally letting them go with him and to serve him
better then guarding. We still hear the screaming and hades
footsteps, the sounds start to die down to give the imprecation that
we are leaving from there.
Scene three, location ext. Time of day, still morning.
Persephone is picking apples, she is listening to the birds as they
make their tweeting sounds. Hades dog approaches her.
Sound effects we here the wind and the birds chirping, we here
apples getting picked and then heavy footsteps of a dog running
towards them.
PERSEPHONE
Oh, hello there arent you a
pretty dog, and so unusual, three
heads, you must be the leader of
you lot then. Do you want an
apple?
Sound effects we hear the dog barking at her, we also hear her
laughing.
PERSEPHONE
Wheres your owner then, surly you
have a proud owner.
HADES
That he does
Sound effects Persephone take a large intake of breath. She has
been startled.
Persephone

Please excuse me sir, you caught

me of guard, and gave me a good
case of the frights.
HADES
There, there it is only me, I see
you like my dog
PERSEPHONE
Well yes sir, he seems a very
lovely dog, may I just ask, do I
know you. It is just that you seem
familiar?
HADES
We have not meet before, for I
should have remembered your pretty
face if I had done so.
Sound effects Persephone giggles.
PERSEPHONE
Well thank you sir, may I ask then
what your name is
HADES
I go by many but I shall not tell
you them now, you shall find out
soon enough but for now I have to
depart. Have a good day my dear
Persephone.
PERSOPHANE
(Shouts)Wait up sir, since when
did I give you my name, (in a
stressed voice now) sir! Arr how
annoying.
Sound effects, we start to hear a loud rumble, a volcano sort of
sound, the earth is splitting apart, we also here screaming coming
from Persephone. Hooves can be heard, the sound of an approaching
chariot, the whip to make it go faster and the sound of the three
headed dog.
PERSOPHANE
(Still screaming in shock)
Suddenly an ear splitting scream can be heard, she is falling down
the spit in the earth, and she is caught by Hades.
Sound effects rocks falling, screaming, still the hooves and the
chariot.

PERSOPHONE
Thank you now get off, of me if
you please.
HADES
(A loud evil laugh can be heard, a
sort of evil genius sound.) My
dear you are going nowhere.
PERSOPHONE
Get of me I am going nowhere with
you, let me go this instance, my
father is ZEUS you know, he will
punish you for this.
HADES
(Laughs again) My brother, how is
he, is he still the same proud man
he was when I last saw him.
PERSOPHONE
GET OF ME!!!! (Scream this)
HADES
Now why would I do that?
PERSOPHONE
Get of me you creep (angry) you
have no right to do this to me.
HADES
I am king of the underworld I can
do as I please now shout up will
you.
PERSOPHONE
(Scream) HELP!!!!!!!
HELP!!!!!!!!
H...
Silence to be had for a bit for dramatic pause.
Scene four, ext. time morning.
Persephone has been taken by now, the ground has swallowed her up
along with her captor, he mother hears the help cry. The next scene
is her mother running in to the fields where she left her to find
her gone.
Sound effects birds chirping, loud heavy running, gusting winds.

DEMETER
Persephone where are you,
Persephone where are you. I heard
you cry for help what has
happened.
She is gone, I must go to my
brother Zeus at once. What am I to
do other than that, there is
nothing else I can do other then
find her.
Sound effects crying, thunder, stormy weather enough to destroy
the plants. Sad screaming.

Scene 5 ext. time they are in the underworld there is no time

Sound effects- muffled crying, screaming.
HADES
Well my dear why you so sad
PERSEPHONE
Well
HADES
I forgot, I dont care. Why you
should be happy, youre in my
company. Youre privileged.
PERSEPHONE
No I am not, I am in hell, how can
I be happy with that, or you for
that matter.
HADES
Doesnt matter what you think, you
are mine I shall have you no
matter what you might say.
PERSEPHONE
No you do not have me, and I will
certainly give you nothing of me
HADES
You just wait and see, I will have
you by the end of the next week,

you make my words and there is

nothing anybody can do about that.
PERSEPHONE
(Cry louder)
End of scene.
Scene 6 interior. Time no time it is mount Olympus.
Demeter has gone to her brother in mount Olympus, she is trying to
beg him to find and if needed save their daughter.
Sound effects classical music playing in the background. Unearthly
feel to it.
DEMETER
Brother
ZEUS
Sister
DEMETER
Can you guess why I am here
brother?
ZEUS
I prefer lover to brother
DEMETER
Are daughter is in trouble, I
was...
ZEUS
She is with Hades
DEMETER
(Slight pause)
What, why has he got her, this is
appalling. Why did you let him get
her, how could you.
ZEUS
(Starts normal then get louder and
louder) How was I supposed to know
he would take her the first time
he laid eyes on her, I may be a
god but I am not the one that can
predict the future, I am Zeus, god
of thunder?

Sound effects thunder

ZEUS
I shall send my son Hermes when he
next returns home, he is good in
these situations and I find that
if I go to visit brother, he might
try something. Do not argue me on
this, this is my last word on the
matter and that is it, now go and
relax (quieter now) you are
killing the crops and we cant
have that can we, sit and relax,
al shall be well again soon.
DEMETER
But...
ZEUS
I thought I said enough.
Sound effects Thunder, footsteps retreating.
ZEUS
HERMES get here at ones you are
needed.
Sound effects wings flapping.
HERMES
Yes father
ZEUS
You are to travel to the
underworld to sort out your
sister, be careful.
HERMES
Yes father.
Sound effects wings flapping this time leaving.
End of scene
Scene 7 interior. Time no time this is the underworld.
Hermes is on his way to the underworld to save is half-sister,
Persephone and hades are still arguing.
Sound effects fire and muffled crying. (Faint in the background)
HADES
Come here my dear

PERSEPHONE
No, I dont want to.
HADES
Come here or I will put you in the
cell again.
PERSEPHONE
Come her Cerberus.
HADES
Persephone now!!
PERSEPHONE
Coming, dont get your knickers in
a twist, it is not as if I can go
anywhere else thanks to you.
HADES
Well now dont be like that, here
have some food.
PERSEPHONE

HADES
I have had word that your father
has sent your step-brother to take
you home, I am letting you, for
the whole time that you have been
here you have been miserable and I
dont like that, you should adore
me, not shout at me.
Look you will not make it home in
one piece in the state that you
are in, at least have something to
fill your tummy for the journey.
PERSEPHONE
(Hesitantly) I can go home and you
will let me.
HADES
(Shouts) Yes, I have no choice on
the matter.
PERSEPHONE
This is no trick then

HADES
NO
PERSEPHONE
I knew that you could not be so
bad after all.
HADES
(Sniffs) here have these
pomegranate seeds, they should be
plenty good for your journey.
PERSEPHONE
Thank you.
Sound effects large crash bang,
HERMES
Hades, I believe you have
something that does not belong to
you.
HADES
I do not, everything here I own
HERMES
I am talking about my sister
HADES
Why she is mine
PERSEPHONE
No I am not, you just said that I
can go.
HADES
(Laugh) you think that I would let
you go that easily, you have me
mistaken for another.
HERMES
What have you done?
HADES
Why I have done nothing, all that
is done was done by her hands.
PERSEPHONE

The seeds, why was I so silly, you

despicable man.
HADES
I know right, and to think if you
had waited little more than 2
minutes you could have been free,
did I not tell you though that you
would be mine.
HERMES
How many seeds did you have?
PERSEPHONE
I believe about 6 seeds, yes six
that is how many, why?
HERMES
Well because you only ate
will only have to spend 6
here as his wife, for the
six you can go up to see
mother.

you should not have taken her, but
considering she has eaten some of
your food, she has to spend time
here, so how fair would it be now

you do then she is yours to do
with what you want, for half the
year.
HADES
Fine, but she is to stay with me
for now.
HERMES
She is to go to her mother right
away, if not you shall still be
punished. She will be back in 6

moths time, now if you dont mind

have other more important jobs to
be getting on with.
PERSEPHONE
(Crying with joy)
Lets go before he changes his
find.
Sound effect swoop sound then loud bang
Scene 8 ext. time- no time
Hermes has returned Persephone to her mother who is crashed out in
mount Olympus in her old rooms.
HERMES
Here, your mother should be in her
rooms go to her, I have stuff to
be getting on with.
PERSEPHONE
Thank you
HERMES
My pleasure to save you from that
creep.
PERSEPHONE
Could father really strip him of
his powers?
HERMES
Like I said I am busy now, dont
worry about silly like things such
as that.
PERSEPHONE
Well thank you then again.
Sound effects wings beating again, fast running
PERSEPHONE
Mother, mother where are you.
DEMETER
Persephone is that you or am I
dreaming again.
PERSEPHONE

No it is me, mother.
DEMETER
Thank you father, that you have
returned to me safely, no I have
you back, I shall never let you
out of my sights again.
PERSEPHONE
Well
DEMETER
Well what, you are home, you are
safe.
PERSEPHONE
I have to become hades wife, I am
so sorry he tricked me in to
eating food, I lost my head for a
minuet there and he took advantage
of that.
DEMETER
(Sadly) when do you go back to him
then, when shall I next see you
for I cannot travel there.
PERSEPHONE
In 6 months time, I have to spend
half the year with either of you.
It is not the best that I could
have hoped for but at least it is
not the worst.
DEMETER
Well at least I have you now and
then, I shall always make sure
that the plants are on their best
behaviour for when you visit, you
can count on that
PERSEPHONE
I know I can mother, and I thank
you for that.
Sound effects whoosh sound and the classical music from before
starts playing to help end the show.
