Criterion A: Inquiring and Analyzing

Time is an essential part of our life and without it? Well we dont really know, however we
should cherish what we have right now and honor the time system to our maximum. Time
has been passing by, and my client or target audience for this project will be Ash Ketchum, a
Pokmon trainer in a fictitious TV series Pokmon. I will be making a time piece for him
which will help him keep track of his time.

My client, Ash Ketchum is featured in the famous manga/anime/gaming series Pokmon.
Pokmon is a portmanteau word, which combines the words Pocket Monsters. Its a
Japanese childrens anime television series, which has adapted for international viewing. It is
based on the Pokmon Gaming series, which is also part of the franchise. These pocket
monsters come in Normal, Electric, Water, Fire, Psychic, Ghost, Ground, Steel, Rock, Fairy,
Grass, Dragon, Bug, Ice, Dark, Fighting, Poison and Flying

Ash Ketchum started off as a 10-year-old boy that had a dream to become a
Pokmon master. Each Pokmon trainer has to start of with a starter
Pokmon however after sleeping in too late on the day that he was
supposed to take it, Professor Oak the scientist responsible for this action
had already given away all the 3 starter Pokmon (Bulbasaur, Charmander,
Squirtle). However Professor Oak had one more Pokmon that he was
willing to give Ash, which was a Pikachu. Ash and his Pikachu would go on
for 8 series and would never leave his side.

Some existing clocks, which were done on the topic of Pokmon, include:

This is a Pokmon clock resembling 3-ghost type
Pokmons. It is a simple clock with the Pokmon
silhouettes sticking out from the back, it features a
concave type bowl that holds the clock mechanism.

This is another type of Pokmon clock, which actually has many
functions. This clock opens up and closes exposing the interiors,
which is hidden inside the Pokball. The interiors contain several
designs of Pokmon.

This is another existing Pokmon clock that is fairly
simple. It involves a basic round shape and a
picture of another ghost type Pokmon. It also
features a standard Hour, Minute and second
hand/

So what is time? Time is the fourth dimension, its a measure in which events can be ordered
from past through present and into the future, and also measure of durations of events and
the intervals between them. Ever since man first noticed the regular movement of the sun
and the stars, we have wondered about the passage of time. Prehistoric people first
recorded phases of the moon a near 30,000 years ago and the recorded time has been a way
by which humanity has observed the heavens and represented the progress of civilization.

Time has been a major subject of study in religion, philosophy and science, but defining it is
something that has baffled even the greatest mathematicians cannot. Nevertheless your
everyday life requires and includes time; from sports to business they all incorporate some
notion of time in their respective measuring systems.

Many ancient civilizations observed astronomical bodies, often the sun and the moon, to
determine times, dates, and seasons. The method that we use now to keep our time is
called the sexagesimal method; it first originated nearly 4000 years ago in Mesopotamia and
Egypt. The oldest known sundial originated from Egypt and it dates back to around 2000BC,
around 325BC the Greeks invented the first water clock. A sundial is a device that tells the
time through the position of the sun. In common designs such as the horizontal sundial, the
sun casts a shadow from its style onto a surface marked with lines indicating the hours of
the day.

Water clocks on the other hand were among the earliest timekeepers that did not require
astronomical bodies. These were stone vessels with sloping sides that allowed water to drip
at a nearly constant rate from a small hole near the bottom. Other clepsydras were
cylindrical or bowl-shaped containers designed to slowly fill with water coming in at a
constant rate. Markings on the inside surfaces measured the passage of hours as the
water level reached them. These clocks were used to determine the hours at night but may
have been used in daylight as well. With this came another version which consisted of a
metal bowl with a hole at the bottom, when placed in a container of water the bowls would
fill and sink in a certain time, this would get used as a time stamp of how many hours have
passed. It is still in use in North African countries in this century.

Some examples of these would include:

Mechanical clocks soon replaced the Old Water clocks, which, by the 13th century had been
millennia. What makes a mechanical clock is a mechanism called the escapement its what
makes a pendulum clock or a grandfather clock move. An escapement ticks in a steady
rhythm and lets gears move forward.

The first escapement was called the verge and foliot mechanism. The foliot is the horizontal
bar that with weights on either end. It sits on a vertical rod, called a verge. The verge has
pallets to engage and release the main gear, which is turned by a heavy stone on the end of
a cable.

After that Monastery records mention bells, gearing and towers that went with either.
Jacopi di Dondi and his son gave the first clear drawing of an escapement in 1364. Theyd
probably building clocks for 20 years by then. So we can only guess that the first mechanical
clocks were made in the late 1200s.

However the problem with pendulums or ordinary clocks was that you have to keep
remembering to wind them. If you forget, then youre in trouble as youll have no idea what
time it is. Another difficulty with pendulum clocks is that gravity is an acting force in its
movement and there is a problem with that because the effect of gravity varies in different
places such as high altitudes. Pendulums also change length depending on the temperature
as when its hot is expands and when its col it contracts which causes inconsistent time
keeping.

electrical pulses. These pulses can either power an LCD display or they can drive a small
electric motor that turns a set of gear wheels that turn the second, minute and hour hand.

Wall clock sizes, most wall clocks are categorized into 3 classes. Small(0 to 29cm),
medium(30 to 40cm) and large(40cm and above).

The type of clock mechanism I will be using for this project is the Quartz mechanism and it
solves all these problems. They are battery powered and because they use so little electricity
that it takes years before you need to replace the battery.
They are also much more
accurate than pendulum clocks, the Quartz mechanism works in a completely different way
to Pendulum clocks and ordinary clocks. They still have gears in them to measure the hours,
minutes and seconds but instead of being regulated by gravity or a moving balance wheel it
is being regulated with electricity. This way a timepiece using the Quartz mechanism would
work just as well on Mount Everest as below the sea.

The reason its called a Quartz clock is because the
clock mechanism uses a Quartz crystal. Quartz is
actually one of the most common materials on Earth.
It is made from a chemical compound called Silicon
Dioxide, and you can find it in sand and most types of
rocks. Whats most interesting about quartz is that it
is piezoelectric which means when it is squeezed it
produces a tiny electrical current. On the other hand
if electricity is passed through the quartz crystal it
oscillates at a specific frequency, specifically 32768
times each second.

Once the electrical current has passed through the Quartz
crystal the vibrations are counted by the circuit board and
are translated into regular

The machines that I will be using for this project are the Scroll Saw and a Power drill.

A Scroll saw is a small electric or pedal-operated saw that is useful for cutting intricate
curves in cases where a jigsaw or coping saw is not appropriate. It is capable of creative
curves with edges and is named after its use in scrollworks, which are sculpture ornaments
with feature scroll-head designs.

A Jigsaw is another material that I will be using. A Jigsaw is a power tool that is used to
create arbitrary curves, as mentioned before it is completely different to a scroll saw.

a cutting tool. However it is usually used to bore holes into material like wood and plastic.

The two natural cycles on which time is measured on are based on the year and the day.
The year is defined, as the time required for Earth to make one complete rotation around
the sun while the day represents the time it takes for the Earth to turn on its own axis.

The earth takes 365 days and approximately 6 hours to go around the sun. However because
the Earth is rotating around its own axis, also move around the Sun, there are 2 types of
days. A day can be described as an interval between the highest point of the Sun in the sky
on two successive days. This averaged out over the year produces our universal time for a
24-hour day.

We absolutely need to know time because it has become such and integral part of our lives
(Mongkol). Time allows us to refer to past memories and experiences in history while noting
the exact moment it happened. Time also helps us keep our daily lives organized each day,

This is a highly debatable question; in my opinion you can save time, not virtually but
physically. By planning out your average day and managing time in a way that you can easily
create space to do more things, this is my definition of saving time. However theoretically it
is impossible to save time, however begin more productive can create the illusion that you
are saving time (Mongkol).

Design Brief:

For this project I will be creating a timepiece, the reason being because time is an integral
part of our lives and keeping track of it is even more important. Therefore I will be producing
a timepiece, which is most preferably a wall clock. It will use a quartz clock mechanism to
function and I will use batteries to power it. The person that I will be making this clock for is
Ash Ketchum, which is the main character in a TV show and game franchise called Pokmon.
This clock will represent either one of Ash Ketchums favorite things, his Pokmon or his
belongings.

With the item chosen above the theme color

should be consistent. For example if Pikachu is
chosen then the colors should be consistent
with yellow as thats Pikachus main color.
This is the clock mechanism that will be given
to us by Ms.Paulenne. It is already made with
a hard shell on it.
This means that the dimensions for the
product should not be above 30cm(width) x
30cm(length) x 30cm(height), or if its a flat
object then 30cm(width) x 30cm(length).
The timepiece should reflect and look like one
of these standard type of time pieces. For
example if a wall clock is chosen it must
function as only a wall clock and not
something you can keep in your car.
The main material used in the product should
be one of the following shown in the section
beside. Additional binding material can be
used which is not stated.

Design Ideas:

Design #1:

This is my first design, so basically what this
design is a container with a clock on the top to
display the time along with a hollow
containment unit, which can be used, for any
sort of storage. There is a better
representation on the design images.

As you can see there are 2 main segments to
this design, 1st the backboard, which will house
the clock mechanism and cover the back end of
the containment unit for the storage. This
design features 5 pieces in total, 2 sidepieces,
one front piece (for the storage), one bottom
piece and one back piece,

My final chosen design is going to be my first
design. Due to the fact that it complies with all of

just that because there were 2 other designs, which
also had all the design specifications to comply. This
was about usability; this clock stands out from both
of them because it has an added feature, which is
its storage box.

With the added storage box it fulfills 2 things, which
is always better than one. It is 20cm by 12cm and
the storage box is 10.5cm by 12.2cm by 8.5cm

After acquiring all your material you have to begin by drawing out the
main plank, which will hold the actual clock mechanism. You have to
start out by drawing a rectangular shaped box with the dimensions
12.2cm(w) by 20cm (l).

Then from the top of the box using a ruler measure 6cm down and
draw a mark (preferably a dot) this will serve as the point where the
hole for the clock will be made.

Design

Draw a line from the dot in the middle out to the left, which has a
length of 4.4cm this, will serve as the radius for when we make the
pokball image as the background.

On another piece of MDF wood you want to begin

making the lower portion of the clock, which is the
storage box, start by drawing out the sidepieces
for the box. These are 2 identical pieces, which
have the dimensions (for 1 plank) 7.5cm(w) by
9.1cm(l). Draw them side-by-side to save on space.

Shane Gladwin

03/09/14

You also require drawing out a front facing piece that

will be the front side of the box. Therefore on the
same piece of MDF draw a rectangle with the
dimensions of 12.2cm by 7.5cm.

<- The image below was taking after it was cut because
I forgot to take a picture while drawing

To finish off drawing the pieces of the box is the bottom
pieces, which will cover everything on the bottom. On
the third piece of MDF wood you want to draw out a
rectangular shape with the dimensions of 10.5cm by
12.2cm. It is .6cm bigger on one side because we want a
little overhang so the main plank (that holds the clock)
can have a perfect fit on top of it.

This picture was taken after I cut it because I forgot to
take pictures ->

In total you will have 5 pieces drawn

out. Therefore you want to cut all of

them out using the Jigsaw, you want

to use the Workbench therefore

using clamps, clamp 2 sides while you

cut one side. Following the lines

carefully cut out the 5 pieces.

^ When you are done cutting all the pieces you should be left with 5, if the edges dont
seem straight it can easily be fixed, just use some sand paper and sand it until its straight.

*Due to no pictures of me drilling this will have to be explained through words only*

You want to now drill the hole for your clock mechanism to go through, you start by setting
up the work bench, using the gap between, place your plank in the middle and tighten both
side until the plank is firmly clamped between the 2 sides of the workbench. For the drill
pick a drill bit which is .8cm wide at the minimum and 1cm wide at the maximum. Before
you begin, using a sharp needle make an indent on the dot which will act as a rest for the tip
of the drill bit therefore making it easier to keep it steady. Once that is done begin drilling

Shane Gladwin

the hole by pushing gently then hard into the dot which will then give you a hole. Test fit the
hole by putting the clock mechanism through and trying to roughly assemble it.

Sometimes the hole will be too small, this

can easily be solved by a simple method. By

cutting out a small strip of sand paper and

wrapping it around a pencil. By putting this

through the hole and twisting the pencil or

pushing it forward and backward can

increase the size.

To glue the box together you need to

begin by gluing the front facing piece

onto the base piece. Make sure it is

vertically glued and on top of the piece

not beside it just like the picture ----------

------------------->

Then the sidepieces can be glued on, they

should be glued onto both the front facing
piece and the base piece leaving one open
end like the picture and there should also be
extra wood sticking out.
<-------------------------

Shane Gladwin

We can begin painting now, using black poster

or acrylic paint and a thick brush (to make it
easier to cover more area), paint the front
facing piece black. This will represent the black
in the middle of the pokball.

21

Shane Gladwin

Design

03/09/14

The sidepiece to the left of the front piece has to
be painted red so using the same type of paint
however red and a thick paintbrush paint it red.

The remaining blank side piece is to be

colored white using the same paintbrush

and paint except using white color paint.

They were colored in that color pattern to symbolize the pokball, which is Red, Black and
White.

After finishing painting everything using

a glue gun glue the edges of the open

end so you can stick it to the back piece.

Shane Gladwin

22

Shane Gladwin

Design

03/09/14

Then while applying some pressure to assure

a good stick, place the 2 pieces together so
they can be one. Make sure this process is
done immediately after the hot glue is
placed on the edges of the storage box
ensuring that it glues properly.

Now you are ready to glue and

assemble the clock mechanism,
begin by gluing the mechanism
box, in a square pattern like the
image.

Then just like the rest of the glued pieces,

immediately place it onto the back piece
with the main shaft sticking out of the hole
you made with the drill. You want to make
sure the box is straight when glued on.

Once you are done gluing the clock mechanism

box onto the back piece you can start
assembling it with the other pieces. Start by
adding the golden screw, which will serve as
the divider between the wood and the parts.

Second, add the hour hand, by gently

squeezing it into the gap between the main
shaft and the golden screw.

Shane Gladwin

23

Shane Gladwin

Design

03/09/14

This comes the minute hand, which fits onto

the screw part of the main shaft.

Then add the tiny little screw on top of the

minute hand.

To finish the clock off you just need to add

the second hand which fits in perfectly
through the tiny hole on the main shaft.

When you are done completing all these steps you should end up with a product, which
looks like this.

For the create section my plan was not entirely followed. The first thing that I changed was
the cutting of the wood. My original plan called for me to cut it using a scroll saw, so I
decided to go for it and the outcomes were not pretty. With the scroll saw being small and
thin it was very hard to cut straight lines, only after cutting through 3 pieces did I realize
something had to be changed. Even after trying to sand out the ugly straight lines I realized I
was sanding way too much off changing my measurements immensely. Therefore I went

Shane Gladwin

Shane Gladwin

Design

back and drew another copy of those 3 pieces and tried cutting them out using the jigsaw.
The outcomes were much better, they werent completely straight but were definitely
straighter than the scroll saw.

Something else that I changed was the inside of the storage box, my original plan did not call
for it to be painted, however after looking at it I realized that it looked uncompleted and
unfinished therefor e I decided to paint the inside black to give it a finishing touch.

Criterion D: Evaluate:

To test my product I decided to use my Design Specifications and turned them into
questions. I used Google Forms to create a simple survey and turned it into a QR code. I
printed the QR code out on an A5 sheet of paper and placed it along with my product at the
display table. Along with that I sent an email out to the whole class just incase I did not have
enough responses with my QR code.

Here were the Questions that were present in the survey compared to the design
specifications:
Design Specifications

Survey Question

Must represent one of the following Pokmon

related items.
Pikachu
- His tail
- Lightning Bolts
- His body
One of the following 4 Pokmon showed
- Charizard
- Squirtle
- Chikorita
- Infernape
Ash Ketchums Valuables
- His hat
- Signature Jacket and Pants
- Pok balls
One of the following elements
- Water
- Fire
- Ground
- Leaf

Must be consistent with the item/Pokmon
he/she has chosen and its colour.

1. Did my clock represent any Ash Ketchum

related things? (Jacket, Pokemon, Pokeballs,
elements)

Shane Gladwin

2. Is the clock consistent with the

item/Pokmon theme I have chosen? (color,
theme)

Shane Gladwin

Design

Must use a quartz clock mechanism, which

will be provided by our teacher.

It must be smaller or as big as the dimensions
30cm x 30cm x 30cm if its a 3D object, but if
its a flat object then it should be no bigger
than 30cm x 30cm.
Must be one of the following type of clocks
- Wall clock
- Table Clock
- Alarm
- Watch

Must use one or a mixture of the following
materials
- MDF wood
- Pipe
- Plastic
- Foam
- Paper Msh

03/09/14

This was not asked as a question, as the

answer would be too obvious because our
teacher only provided 1 type of clock which
was a quartz clock.
3. Is it within the margins of 30cm by 30cm(if
2D) and 30cm by 30cm by 30cm for 3D?

4.Which one of the following types of clocks is
this product? (Wall clock, Alarm, Table clock
and Watch)

5. Which one or a mixture of the following

materials did I use?(Paper, MDF wood, Plastic,
Foam)

6. What was your favorite part?

7. What can be improved anyways

The reason I chose to include the questions What was your favorite part and What can be
improved overall was the see the general feedback on what I did good and what I did
wrong.

On the next page are my responses; the Question numbers correspond to the questions in
the right column in the table above.

The results table above shows my success against my own design specifications. When
looked at, the survey responses above show that the majority does agree that my product
matches with my design specifications. However a couple of people stated that It looks like
an alarm clock and a wall clock, also that it does not represent anything related to Ash
Ketchum. This shows that my clock does fail standing out as a table clock which was my
ultimate goal. The clock as a whole was supposed to represent Pokeballs thus the theme
and color.

However, a lot of people seemed to like the idea of the Pokeball as the design on my clock
face as 6 people out of 13 answered that. That wasnt the only thing that the people that
surveyed my product favored towards my product. Some people such as Person #8 and #13
said that they liked the fact that there was storage space attached to it. The 2 main parts
which were meant to stand out when designing the original product was the storage and the
clock face as they would be the 2 things that would visually pop out to you, after looking at
these results I would say that the clock face definitely popped out, even though the storage
box wasnt noticed as much, at least 2 people noticed it.

Nonetheless the Pokeball on the clock face wasnt perfect either, almost all the people
complained that the painting could have been nicer showing that not a lot of time and effort
was put into creating that part of the clock. Therefore making the aesthetics a major part on
the things I want to improve on this clock. Some other things I want to improve personally is
how I cut the pieces out. I do not think that I have cut them to a professional finish.

This Pokmon clock can affect my Client; Ash Ketchum, in many ways. The purpose of this
clock was to tell the time and to provide a storage space for my client. This final product of
mine can do that. With my clock, my client can effectively tell the time and store any of his
items in it. These items can include a Pokeball, Dog Tags, and Keys. Overall I think that this
build was a success and turned out as per my design.
