The typical leadership opportunities have always terrified me. Through this program I have learned that there is so much more to being a leader. Leadership is found in many forms and there are many different types of leadership styles.

I have never jumped at opportunities to be in a typical leadership position. I have always
been quiet, shy and reserved, and the typical leadership opportunities have always terrified me. Frankly, I thought these were the only leadership opportunities available. Through this program I have learned that there is so much more to being a leader. Through exposure to different leadership styles I have found I best correlate with servant leadership. I see myself more as part of a group serving for the well-being of everyone instead of acting on a single power. By understanding that there are a variety of leadership styles I no longer feel intimidated by seeking out leadership positions and now have future professional goals that encompass leadership roles. I have been able to participate in leadership opportunities by volunteering in the community, participating in Touro University Nevadas Research Day and advocating for occupational therapy at a variety of events. I have learned that leadership is found in many forms and there are many different types of leadership styles. For example, I participated in a language workshop provided by a speech language pathologist (SLP) because there were many children on my caseload during my level II fieldwork that would have benefited from speech therapy but there was a shortage of SLP. Going above and beyond my job requirements I was exemplifying leadership. By increasing my knowledge on leadership through class and by participating in different leadership opportunities in the community I have pushed the bounds of my comfort level in leadership roles and in turn have found that my leadership skills have grown immensely. I am more comfortable volunteering for leadership positions and have taken on more leadership roles in group settings.
I have had difficulty embracing leadership opportunities in the past however I now feel empowered to continue to divulge myself in leadership positions and discover more of my leadership capabilities.
