Lesson/Activity Plant Template
Teacher Candidate: Jessica Stone
Name of Lesson: Playground Scavenger Hunt
Subject: Science

Grade: K/1

Rationale for lesson: The purpose of this lesson is to have the children use
their senses to find specific items out on the playground.
Learning outcomes: The students will be able to find appropriate items
that fit into the categories listed.
Assessment of student outcomes: Observation
Related Foundations/Indiana Academic Standard:
K.1.1. Use all senses as appropriate to observe, sort and describe objects according to their
composition and physical properties, such as size, color and shape. Explain these choices
to others and generate questions about the objects.
1.1.2 Characterize materials as solid or liquid, investigate their properties, record observations
and explain the choices to others based on evidence (i.e., physical properties).
Materials Needed: Checklist and writing utensil
Lesson/Activity Presentation:
Anticipatory set: I will begin by asking children what they know
about scavenger hunts and if they have ever participated in one.
Teaching procedures: First we will discuss what a scavenger hunt is
and how to participate in one. Next I will hand out the list and read off the
list of items. I will ask the children what items they might look for while out
on the playground.

Guided & independent practice: The children will work in pairs to

find the items on the list.
Closure: After about 10 minutes, I will gather the children together
and we will discuss what they found. We will determine if they found items
that fit into the categories listed.
Differentiated instruction: I will pair good readers with not so good
readers. In the future, I can make a list with picture hints as guides to find
the items.
Multicultural instruction (if appropriate):
Technology (if appropriate):
Reflection on lesson: The children were very excited to do this activity
when we discussed it, however, it did not get completed as I would have
hoped. I tried to set the children into groups so there was a strong reader in
each group. Instead, the children congregated around Allison and me, asking
for our help reading the list. In the future, I think it would be better to have a
picture guide. I would also like to have bags available for the children to
collect the items of interest (although, items like the flag pole and climbing
equipment would be difficult to collect). Ive seen a scavenger hunt done
with pictures instead of words, where the teacher took pictures of things on
the playground and the children had to find those items. This would be
interesting to try, and I think easier for those that struggle with reading.
