How did the


differences
between the
North and the
South ultimately
lead to the Civil
War?

Standard 3-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of life in the antebellum period, the
causes and effects of the Civil War, and the impact of Reconstruction in South Carolina.
Indicator 3-4.1: Compare the economic conditions for various classes of people in South
Carolina, including the elite, the middle class, the lower class, the independent farmers, and the
enslaved and free African Americans.

Monday:

Wednesday:

Activating Strategy: The teacher will review with the students the upper, middle, lower, and independent
farmers with the students.
Teaching Strategy:
1. The students will take notes in their flipcharts based on the enslaved African Americans PowerPoint.
2. While the students are taking notes, the teacher will ask the students questions about what they are
writing and reading.
3. The students will complete a worksheet based on what they have learned thus far.
Summarizing Strategy:
The students will be given an opportunity to talk about what they have learned.
Activating Strategy: The teacher will review with the students the upper, middle, lower, independent farmers,
and the enslaved slaves with the students.
Teaching Strategy:
1. The students will take notes in their flipcharts based on free African Americans PowerPoint.
2. While the students are taking notes, the teacher will review the information with the students and ask
them questions.
Summarizing Strategy:
The students will divide into groups and present their economic classes readers theatre they are in and complete
a worksheet.
Activating Strategy: The teacher will review the economic classes with the students.

Thursday:

Teaching Strategy:
1. The teacher will have the students take a sheet of paper and split the paper in half.
2. The students will choose two economic classes to compare (the students will use their flipbooks as a
reference).
3. The students will write their topic & closing sentence, and details for their paragraphs.
4. The students will write their paragraphs. (4-5 sentences)
Summarizing Strategy:
The students will be given the opportunity to share what they have written. .
Activating Strategy: The teacher will review with the students the economic classes and the Gullah culture.

Friday:

Teaching Strategy:
1. The students will play a jeopardy game on the economic classes, and the Gullah culture to help review
for the test.
Summarizing Strategy:
The teacher will give students and opportunity to talk about what they have learned about the Gullah culture
and the economic classes.
Activating Strategy: The teacher will review with the students the economic classes and the Gullah culture.

Tuesday:

Teaching Strategy:
1. The students will take a test on the economic classes and the Gullah culture.
Summarizing Strategy:
The students will turn in their tests.
