Rationale/Reflection

InTASC/NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 4. USING DEVELOPMENTALLY EFFECTIVE APPROACHES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that teaching and learning with
young children is a complex enterprise, and its details vary depending on childrens ages, characteristics,
and the settings within which teaching and learning occur. They a) understand and use positive
relationships and supportive interactions as the foundation for their work with young children and
families. Candidates b, c) know, understand, and use a wide array of developmentally appropriate
approaches, instructional strategies, and tools to connect with children and families and d) positively
influence each childs development and learning.

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my ECED 243 Cognitive Curriculum, course during the fall semester of 2014, I
independently created a PowerPoint documentation panel of my learning invitation Messy Kitchen.
The panel displays action shots of the children interacting and playing in appropriate domains, as well as
conversations and statements form the children. The panel also shows the supplies that were used, before
pictures, and the children interacting through play. I displayed this in the classroom on my laptop for the
children as well as their parents to see what they had been doing in class.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the completion of my documentation panel I was able to document appropriate
practices, as well as the teaching and learning with young children. I also gained knowledge on
understanding and creating positive relationships. Through this experience I now know the importance of
upholding these standards and guidelines and using them in the classroom and to use developmentally
effective approaches. Something that I will take from this assignment is how well Vygotskys theory that
children learn through play really worked with all of the children and how I was able to capture and
display that and how it helped develop positive prelateships with the children and their families. Also the
conversations that they had and how they were able to connect different learning centers such as science
and math into the dramatic play was amazing and will be saved for later use.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the

InTASC/NAEYC Standard:
This project is only one of the many projects where my competency of knowing about and
upholding ethical standards and other professional guidelines comes through. This project has helped to
support young children and their families while using developmentally effective approaches. It has also
taught me how important and easy it is to create positive relationships with these families by documenting
and sharing a part of their childrens day with them . I now feel more confident that my teaching
practices are developmentally appropriate for young children and families.
