Rationale/Reflection

InTASC/NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 6. Becoming a Professional
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs identify and conduct themselves as members of the
early childhood profession. They know and sue ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to
early childhood practice. They are continuous, collaborative, learners who demonstrate knowledgeable,
reflective and critical perspectives on their work, making informed decisions that integrate knowledge from a
variety of sources. They are informed advocates for sound educational practices and policies. (NAEYC, 2010 )

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my fall semester of 2014, I participated in the Secret Families Charity event with some of
my classmates. We met at the Muncie Meijer where we split up into teams and shopped for eight different
families in Delaware County. Each person of the family had a list of things in need and we had a certain
amount of money to buy for each member of the family. After we completed all the shopping we were shuttled
over to the local Toyota dealership where we took a shift in wrapping all of the gifts for the families. After
wrapping we carpooled to the families houses where we personally delivered the gifts for them. It was a very
special moment that I will keep with me forever and use for future references to help other families in need.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through participating in this organization it has really opened my eyes to how many children and
families are really in need and how giving up my time for one day really helped them out and mattered to
them. By helping out with this organization it has really taught me to give back and to help others who are less
fortunate. It has also helped me realize how important a pair of hat and glove might be to a child and their
family, and that might be the only thing they have to call mine. Jean Piaget has really inspired me to provide
these children with hands on experiences in the classroom. Another thing that opened my eyes is how I should
be more aware as a teacher to asking the children and their families to bring in things for the class all the time
because these families are struggling to get by and might not have an extra dollar to bring in crayons or other
supplies. It has made me more aware of how many children and their families live in poverty and how I should
become more aware of ways to help them.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the

InTASC/NAEYC Standard:
This charity event is only one of the many events I have participated in where my competency of
knowing about and upholding ethical standards and other professional guidelines comes through. This project
has helped me in many different ways to support young children and their families in a professional manner. I
now feel competent on demonstrating knowledgeable, reflective and critical perspectives from a variety of
sources to the children and families as well as conducting myself as a member of the early childhood
profession.
