Rationale/Reflection

InTASC/NAEYC Standard:
Standard 2. Building Family and Community Relationships
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that successful early
childhood education depends upon partnerships with childrens families and communities. They
know about, understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of childrens
families and communities. They use this understanding to create respectful, reciprocal
relationships that support and empower families, and to involve all families in their childrens
development and learning.

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my ECED 204 Families in transition, course during the fall semester of 2014, I
created a Helping hands PowerPoint that had many resources to help children and their families
with disabled parents. This PowerPoint contains different book resources for both children and
their parents, as well as community resources that can help meet their needs. I have posted this
onto the Google Drive to access it to other educators. I also collaboratively created a Prezi to
represent my family scenario project. To help our family we found many different local
resources that could help the family become a more functional group and work as one. Some
resources we found were places to spend quality time with the children like the Childrens
Museum or the Monon trail, and local counseling and anger management courses.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the completion of my Helping Hands project and Family Scenario Prezi I was
able to use ethical standards and guidelines as well as my own thoughts and ideas. I have also
gained knowledge on many different resources that are available in surrounding counties for
families with many needs. I now know the importance of upholding these standards and
guidelines and using them in the classroom to create a healthy and happy learning environment
that the children can thrive in. Sigmund Freud is the theorist that I believe ties in best with these
standards. He believes that a childs development would directly influence how one behaves as
an adult. It has also helped me create and support respectful and reciprocal relationships with
diverse families and the community.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the

InTASC/NAEYC Standard:
These projects are only a few of the many projects where my competency of knowing
about and upholding ethical standards and other professional guidelines comes through. This
project has helped me demonstrate knowing and understanding familys needs and finding
resources to help them as well as creating respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and
empower families. Through creating and developing the PowerPoint, Prezi, and finding
resources that could benefit the familys needs best, I now feel more confident that I know and
understand , and value the importance and complex characteristics of childrens families and
communities and that my teaching practices are developmentally appropriate for young children
and families. Through these experiences I have been able to create partnerships with children,
families and the community, I value and respect the characteristics of these families, and will
involve all families in their childrens development and learning.
