HAPPENINGS
Whats New in Room 46?

APRIL
Dear Parents,
HAPPY SPRING! Im certainly
elated to see longer days of light
and a bit more warmth in the air
after our winter!!
I hope you and your family enjoy
the few days of Spring break.
The PSSA will be upon us soon
after the children return. We start
Tuesday, April 14th. Remember
testing is in the morning only! The
first week will be language arts and
the following week math.
Please be sure that your child gets
a good nights sleep and eats
breakfast in the morning.
There will be no homework
assigned during PSSAS. Their
brains will be taxed enough!

LANGUAGE ARTS
I will be reviewing all
comprehension strategies and skills.
We are continuing to perfect our text
evidence responses to reading
prompts.

We are working on comprehension

packets in preparation for upcoming
testing.
Remember to go over anything that
your child has incorrect. We do so in
class, but the extra reinforcement is
always helpful.
We will begin a unit on poetry. The
children will learn how to write about
10 different types of poems. They will
be creating a book of their poetry.
This book will come home at the end
of the unit for your child to share the
poems and for you to critique it.
Ask them about their Color Poem.
They will be working on it during the
afternoons of PSSA testing days. They
will be typing it and learning how to
change font, size, color etc.
I have also asked that every child
share a favorite poem during the
month of April because it is National
Poetry Month. They have been given
the day they will be sharing a poem.
We will also be doing several creative
pieces of writing.
Its a joy to watch your children write
with such ease. They truly have
developed a passion for writing! I

hope you are able to see the great

strides your child has made.

MATH
Please continue to practice
multiplication and division facts as
often as possible. Fact fluency is
very important. The fact fluency
benchmark for fourth grade is 100
facts in 5 minutes.
The number one complaint of
middle school math teachers is that
children dont have their facts
committed to memory. They are
counting on fingers and getting
multi-step problems wrong
because of errors with facts.
Several of my children are very
weak with their fact fluency.
We will start unit 6 after PSSA and
return back to the math
Investigations book.

SCIENCE
We completed our FOSS Water Kit.
As a culminating activity to the unit
the children will work in a group to
create their own waterwheel. They
will have a lot of fun while learning
about new properties of water.
They all loved this unit.
We will not be doing another
science unit during April.
Our final unit of the year will be
chemistry.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We have started a unit on
economics. The children will learn
the following: wants/needs,
supply/demand,
producer/consumer
goods/services, division of labor,
capital resources, natural
resources, human resources,
money, check writing, budgeting
money, opportunity costs,
production costs and
advertising/tricks.
You will be receiving a letter about
the Trade Fair which will take place
on April 29th. This activity will
enable the children to see many of
the above mentioned terms come
to life.
They will view several worthwhile
pieces on advertising and one
entitled Econ and Me.
Hopefully I may spark an interest
in someone to be a future
economist! We certainly could use
the help!!
