KITE case 1: 2025-1

Grade: 9-12
Subject: Foreign Language
Technology used: Video conferencing; audio conferencing
Summary: In a high school German class, the teacher used large televisions, distance learning
equipment, and video conferencing equipment to allow her students to listen to German students
speak their native language. There was not a formal assignment for this lesson. It was an
opportunity to observe a casual conversation in a foreign language that the students had been
studying.
Reflection: Although there was not a formal assignment with this lesson, the case is a good
example of bringing technology into the classroom because the teacher incorporates technology
is many different aspects of her classroom. By teaching distance learning classes, she/he is
adhering to the NETS standard in the Technology Operations and Concepts in which the
instructor shows that she/he is continually growing in technological knowledge and skills in
order to stay current with emerging technology. This specific lesson would be considered
redefinition aspect of the SAMR Model because the use of technology allowed a task which was
previously unconceivable. Before this type of technology was available, students could have
listened to tape recording of a foreign language, but would have only heard a formal
conversation recorded for the purpose of student use. With the implementation of new
technology, students can not only hear a foreign language in a casual way, but they can also
observe facial expressions which can help to understand connotations in conjunction with the
words.

Suggestions for Improvement: An improvement for this case would be to have the students be
part of the conversation with the native German speakers. The teacher could have his/her
students listen to the conversation between the native German speakers in order to become
comfortable with the casualness of the conversation. Then, in an additional lesson, the students
could have a video conference with the native German speakers when they would be able to
carry on a conversation with the native German speakers.
KITE case 2: 2023-1
Grade: 10
Subject: English/Language Arts
Technology used: Internet searches
Summary: The teacher of a tenth grade English class used Internet searches to help students
realize how movie producers use music to manipulate the feelings and moods of movie goers.
This instructor showed the students a post 1920s landscape and then played various types of
music, while the students continued to view the landscape, to see how the music effected their
perception of the picture. The assessment for this assignment for this lesson was a journal entry.
This classroom only had one computer, and the students did not use it.
Reflection: This case is a good example of using technology to enhance the lesson because the
teacher was able to show the students how music can affect visual art. By having the students
discuss and write about how the music made them feel about the art was a great way to use
higher order skills. The teacher adhered to two different NETS standards. The first NETS
standard which can be applied to this lesson is from the Planning and Designing Learning

Environments area because the teacher researched and evaluated the channels of music that
was played for the students. The second standard is in the Teaching, Learning, and the
Curriculum section because this type of assignment encourages higher order skills and creativity.
The lesson would fit into the Modification section of the SAMR Model because without the
technological resources this type of lesson would have been very complicated.
Suggestions for Improvement: While this lesson was affective overall, changing the way the
lesson was structured would have had an even larger impact. If instead of showing the students
the picture and playing music for them, the teacher could explain the concept to them, and have
the students put together a presentation showing the effect. For example, divide the students into
pairs, give each pair an image to use, and require them to find five different types of music that
create a range of emotions. Then, the students could create a video using their assigned image
and various songs to create a specific range of feelings.
KITE case 3: 2110-1
Grade: 7
Subject: Visual/Performing Arts
Technology used: internet searching; webpages/linklist
Summary: In a seventh grade art class, a teacher had her students use the internet in order to
gather information on Georgia OKeefe. This type of technological use is below a seventh grade
level. Students were required research OKeefe, and find biographical information about her and
images of her works. They were also required to find historical information, dates, and titles of

her works as part of their research. After gathering all this research, students would attempt to
recreate her works and answers questions in written form.
Reflection: This case was a good example of bringing technology into the classroom because
instead of just giving a lecture on OKeefe, the teacher allowed the students to construct their
own learning by gathering the information for themselves. Since the students constructed their
own knowledge, they will be more likely to retain the information. This type of activity would be
considered modification in the SAMR model because by changing the introduction of the subject
from listening (lecturing) to gathering (Internet searches), the teacher modified the activity. The
teacher meets the NETS for teachers in the area of Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum
because she addressed the needs of diverse learners when she used technology to support learner
- centered strategies. By having the students do their own research, they could use video, audio,
or text to find the information about OKeefe.
Suggestions for improvement: The case could be improved by changing the assessment aspect
of the lesson. In the original assessment, students were required to answer questions about what
they had learned. In order to use technology in way that would be appropriate for a seventh grade
student, the teacher in this case could have the students put together a digital presentation over
the information found. Students could also include, in their presentations, pictures videos of their
recreations of OKeffes works in various stages of development.
