A Paragraph Explaining the Project:
Through in-depth discussion, reading, poems, addition, and media exposure students will
learn of ways in which others are of service to their community. Students will then make personal
efforts to be of service to their family, community, and school (yard work, carrying bags, opening
doors, etc.). As a way to track the deeds and services students are providing student will, with the
teachers help, construct a classroom representation of the ways in which they provide service to
their family, community, and school. The representation will be in the form of a flower garden
made of construction paper.
After reading Ordinary Marys Extraordinary Deed, and Cliffords Good Deeds. The
class will discuss how to be a community helper, family helper, and school helper. Students will
begin to keep track of what good deeds/services they provide to others. The deeds and will be
recorded on paper flower petals, stems, and leaves. As deeds/services accrue on the paper shapes the
teacher will start gluing and taping the pieces together to hang in the classroom window.
As a link into other content areas student will practice reading poems about community
service, and will also use their counting on mathematics strategies to count the deeds/services
completed by the classroom in order to tally the number of deeds the classroom is preforming.
This project is meant as an introduction to community service younger students, and as students
move from helping out at home, they will gain an awareness of how to help at school, and in the
neighborhood.
