Discuss How Coastal Areas in Guyana are Exposed to The Risks of Disaster

Due to Climate Change

Climate change, according to the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate
Change, is defined as change in climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human activities
that alters the condition of the global atmosphere. Guyanas coastal areas are at an all time high
risk of disasters due to rising sea levels, heavy rainfall, flooding and rise in temperature because
of climate change.
Guyana is located on the northern coast of South America and is considered part of the
Caribbean. It is bordered to the south and south-west by Brazil, the east by Suriname, the west
by Venezuela and to the north by the Atlantic Ocean, the second largest ocean in the World. It
occupies an area of 83,000 squared miles and has some of the most luscious forests and trees
in the World.
Guyana has four natural regions, all named based on their features and properties. Its
coastal region, namely the Low Coastal Plain, because it is below sea level, near to the ocean
and is a flat piece of land, is the most populated region in Guyana. Our capital city, Georgetown,
and four of Guyanas five towns are located there.
Rises in temperature can causes excess rainfall which will lead to flooding and damages
adding up to significant amounts. Guyanas Low Coastal Plain is the most fertile area in Guyana
and so most of its agriculture is done there. Most of our crops and produces are grown here for
export and use. Flooding due to excess rainfall can cause damages to crops and kill agriculture
animals. Also the rising temperature can cause sea levels to rise overtop the countrys main sea
defence mechanism, the seawalls, causing flooding and destruction of fertile soil because of the
salinity of the sea water.
The Low Coastal Plain is one of the most commercial areas in Guyana. Heavy rainfall,
flooding and rise in temperature can have a negative impact on businesses and companies all
throughout its coastal
