SWBAT- Practice counting to 20 by using a dot to dot activity
SWBAT- Solve subtraction problems within 5 and explore subtraction strategies

3. Materials: Smartboard, Student Activity Book pages 187 and 188, pencils, abcya.com,
exit slip, crayons
4. Procedures:
Introduction-

Before lesson, have students participate in numbers on parade, counting 100s

chart, circling number day, etc. (carpet)
Boys and girls, today we are going to review addition and subtraction as a class! We
are also going to practice counting to 20 while completing a dot-to-dot! After this
lesson (by the end of class), I hope that addition and subtraction will be even easier

for you! You will be more comfortable solving these problems using counting tools,
pictures, or your fingers!
Body1. Review addition and addition facts
- What does the addition sign tell us to do? (It shows putting together two partners)
- How can we remember the addition sign? (Two arms put together) (Demonstrate)
- Can we recall how many parts or lines the addition sign has? (Two)
- (Turn and talk) Explain and describe some ways that we can solve addition
problems to your partner. (using our fingers, drawing, manipulatives, etc).
- Adding and Subtracting song Kid Planet Video
2. Lets Practice! (10 short, interactive problems)
- Abcya.com Marble math addition (Practice addition within 5 with
manipulatives)
- After I model an example, students will come up to solve problems and explain
how they got their answer.
3. Subtraction review
- Who can describe what we are doing when we subtract? (Taking away)
- What does the subtraction sign look like? (One line)
- How can we model subtraction? (drawing shapes and crossing them out)
- Practice on the board (model problem, then turn over solving to students)
- Asking students- Why did you cross out ___ circles?
4. Independent Practice
- Pull up Student Activity Book page 187 and 188 on Smartboard
- Explain each section to students
- Students can solve these problems whichever way is best for them (choice): using
their fingers, drawing small pictures, or using their crayons as manipulatives to
add/subtract
- Model one example from each section and take any questions
- Send students off to complete sheet independently
- Walk around room to monitor students progress and assist them when needed

Closing5. Exit Ticket: Students will solve two short problems that demonstrate knowledge of
what we just practiced in the lesson.
- Students will also rate their understanding of the material. They will color in a
happy face if they feel confident, a confused face if they still need some help, and
an unhappy face if they still need a lot of help.

5. Assessment:
- Participation
- Reviewing Student Activity Book pages
- Exit Ticket
6. Management Issues, Transitions, and Differentiation:
- One two three, eyes on me!
- Clapping phrase to get students attention
- Transitioning by table colors, row numbers, etc.
- Breaking down concepts/working one-on-one
7. Self-Reflection and Evaluation of Lesson
