Commitment to Content Knowledge and

Scholarship
During my time here at West Virginia State University, I feel that I have
learned a lot about what it takes to become a teacher. Being a teacher is
more than just going through the motions and teacher from a manual.
Teachers must be positive role models for students, and show that they care
about their students success. As educators, we also need to care for our own
learning and success. One way that we can do that, is to continue attending
classes and workshops on information relative to our classroom. Throughout
my college career, I have maintained a 3.4 GPA and made the Deans list
multiple times. I was also inducted into the National Honors Society, Kappa
Delta PI. I am very proud of my accomplishments while being a student at
West Virginia State University.
Of all the commitments I have written, I find the commitment to
content knowledge and scholarship to be the most important. To create
lifelong learners, we must understand the content and also be able to teach
our students the content. My hope is that when students leave my
classroom at the end of the school year, they will have a deeper love for
learning. I am also committed to assessing my students based on the
national and state standards. When I plan my lessons, I incorporate state
and national standards if available. I use the standards to align my objectives
and assessment. Many students feel that the content they learn is irrelevant.
I want my students to think differently and want to learn the content that
must be taught.
My main artifact is one of my lesson plans from Education 316. I was
able to align my national standard with my state standard. During this
lesson, I taught the difference between fact and opinion, and also had my
students to write an opinion piece using a OREO graphic organizer.
My second artifact is my teaching science lesson plan, titled Rockin
and Poppin. I provided a state and national standard which align with one
another. I taught this lesson to the afterschool program as well as to my
Teaching Science (Education 318) class. We did an experiment with pop rocks
and coke and diet coke.
My third artifact shows another great accomplishment of mine while
attending West Virginia State University. I am proud to say that I was named

to the Deans List more than one semester of my college career. I feel that
being named to the Deans list is a major accomplishment. I have attached
my Deans List certificate to also show my commitment to content
knowledge and scholarship.
My last artifact meets ACEI Standard 5.2: Collaboration with families,
colleagues, communities and agencies. In Education 426: Creating Learning
Communities, we were to create a parent communication letter to show our
ability to communicate and interact with parents. I created a field trip letter
to show my ability to communicate with parents, other teachers, and the
principal.
