*This classroom management plan has been created for a second grade classroom.

All facets of
this plan will be explicitly taught and rehearsed in the beginning of the year. This plan, if
implemented correctly, will create an effective, efficient, warm, caring and communal classroom
environment.
Classroom Goals
Students will:
Learn to work with others cooperatively and respectfully
Listen attentively and follow directions
Follow classroom procedures and rules
Learn to resolve conflicts with appropriate strategies
Complete assignments while adhering to due dates
Discuss, interpret and apply their new understandings
Build on their foundation of literacy skills
Expand mathematical problem solving skills by using more complex addition and
subtraction strategies
Learn to assume more responsibility for maintaining and organizing their work
Learn to budget their time and complete more long-term tasks and projects
Guidelines for Success
Both teacher and students will be respectful of differing opinions, thoughts, feelings,
accomplishments, and personal space
Students will learn and adhere to the classroom rules and procedures
Students will listen carefully and participate in class discussions
Teacher will model appropriate classroom behavior at all times
The classroom will be a safe learning environment for all students
Students will always be encouraged to ask questions to solidify understanding
Students will take responsibility for their actions
Teacher will frequently praise students for practicing appropriate behavior
Classroom Rules
1. Keep hands and feet to yourselves
2. Raise your hand if you would like to speak
3. Listen to others quietly and respectfully while they speak
4. Listen carefully to teachers directions
5. Come to class prepared and ready to engage
6. Be kind and respectful to others
7. Do your best work (focus, try hard and give it your all!)
Consequences for Classroom Rule Violations
I will use a Clip up, Clip down system; student behavior will be tracked using a leveled scale,
ranging from Parent Contract to Outstanding. Each student will have a clothespin with their
name on it, and each day will begin with all clothespins on the Ready to Learn section of the
scale. Upon a rule violation (depending on the severity), the student will be given one warning to

discontinue the behavior, and will be asked to clip down to the Warning section of the scale.
If another warning is necessary, the student will be asked to clip down on the scale to
Consequence. Students whose clips are on the Consequence section of the scale will be
required to move to the Quiet Corner of classroom, where they will have 10-15 minutes to
write about their inappropriate behavior, and their plans on how to improve it. The student will
then discuss this plan with me before they may return to their seat. If any more infractions follow
this consequence, a phone call home will be required (and students will clip down to Parent
Contract). I will also send home a letter to the parents detailing the students actions and plans
to rectify the situation, and will ask that the parents sign the letter. If any inappropriate behavior
persists following the Parent Contract, the student will be required to meet with an
administrator to plan and implement a behavioral management plan. Any incident that causes
harm to themselves or others will immediately result in a trip to the guidance counselor or
principals office, as well as a phone call home.
Along with clipping down, students will have
plenty of chances to clip up Students who show
model behavior, acts of kindness or other positive
actions will be asked to clip up on the scale.
Those who reach the Outstanding portion of the
scale may choose a prize from the prize bin at the
end of the day. Any student that frequently reaches
the Outstanding portion of the scale will get a
positive phone call home.

Classroom Procedures
Upon entering the classroom, the students will be asked to:
1. Hang coats and other belongings in assigned cubby/locker, and take out any materials
that will be needed over the course of the day. They will put these materials directly into
their desks.
2. Place lunch in the lunch bin, or follow school procedures on hot-lunch request (this may
mean the student must place their name tag on a chart identifying their lunch choice, or
place their name tag in a basket to be collected and reviewed, etc.) If I am afforded the
opportunity to create the hot-lunch system in my classroom, I will have a bulletin board
with labeled pockets to save time and avoid confusion.

3. Quietly move to assigned seat, and gather any homework or projects that are currently
due.
4. Place homework/projects in designated bins, then return to their seats.
5. Take out pencils and assignments books, and record due-dates listed on the front board.
6. Put away assignment book, and take out a piece of paper to complete the Morning
Message (The morning message will most likely be a writing exercise, but occasionally
it may be a problem-solving or reading exercise. In the event that it is not a writing
exercise, the Morning Message display will list exactly what supplies the students will
need to complete the task).
7. After completing the Morning Message, the students may quietly choose a book to read
on the rug or at their desks until everyone is ready to begin the morning meeting.
Classroom Jobs
Classroom jobs will be assigned on a weekly basis; students names will be chosen at random
from a basket each week. I will create a chart to keep track of each job a student has been
assigned to make sure that I give every student a chance to have each job. Classroom job
assignments include:
Line Leader- Student will be required to lead the line each time the class must leave the
room. With power comes great responsibility, and this student must model excellent
hallway behavior.
Plant/Pet Upkeep- Student will water any plants in the classroom, and feed and classroom
pets (most likely fish).
Calendar Helper- Student will adjust the calendar to show which day it is. They will be
asked to read the date aloud after doing so.
Cafeteria Inspector- Student will inspect the class lunch table for any leftover trash or
crumbs.
Door Holder- Student will hold the door for each classmate when travelling outside of the
classroom.
Cubby Organizer- Student will inspect the cubbies after each student has put away their
belongings (or gathered them at the end of the day). They will be asked to organize the
area in the event that a mess has been made (students will be taught exactly how to
arrange their belongings in their cubby on the very first day of school).
Paper Passer- Student will help me pass out any papers throughout the day.
Room Inspector- Student will inspect the classroom at the end of the day to make sure
everything is in its correct place.
Collector- Student will collect any important papers/materials that were handed out
throughout the day for any student who was absent. They will place these materials in the
absent students mailbox.
Caboose- Student will be the very last child in line, and will also model excellent hallway
behavior.
Lateness
Students who arrive after the bell rings must report to the office for a late pass (a note
from parent/guardian should be provided in the event a child is late to school).

Tardiness will be reported on students report card; if this is a frequent issue, a call home
will most likely be necessary.

Activities
Whole-class, small-group and individual work
Guided reading groups
Shared reading and read-aloud
Morning Meeting
Small-group discussion and projects
Specials, such as gym class, art class, etc.
Silent reading
Field trips or school-organized events
Recess/lunch
Cultural activities
Hands-on experiences (science, math, etc.)
Assignment
Upon entering the classroom and putting belongings away, students will be required each
day to copy assignments written on the board into their assignment book (all assignments
will be written on the front board BEFORE the students arrive to class).
The Paper Passer will be responsible for handing out instruction sheets for projects,
homework sheets and example projects/writing assignments. Students will be responsible
for placing these sheets in their homework folder to take home.
Long-term assignments will be tracked with the help of a checklist (also handed out by
the Paper Passer) - The checklist will include requirements for the projects, as well as a
timeline, detailing specifically when each portion of the project needs to be completed by.
Parents will receive a calendar on the first day of each month, specifying important due
dates for long-term assignments (discussed later).
Turning in Assignments
After the students enter the classroom and follow classroom procedures 1 through 3, they
will be required to take out any assignments that are due. Completed homework will be
placed in the clearly labeled Homework bin. Completed projects or papers will be
placed in the Projects bin. All assignments due for the day must be turned in during the
typical morning procedures. I will give a three minute reminder before the homework bin
is collected. Students must notify me in the event that they do not have an assignment
that is due.
Assignments that are completed during the school day will be placed in the In Class
bin.
Students who have not completed their homework due to confusion will be required to
get a parent signature to prove they attempted to complete it.
Returning Assignments to Students

Students will be assigned a mailbox in the beginning of the year. All tests, homework,
projects, and other graded work will be returned to the students by the use of their
mailboxes.
Assignments or tests/quizzes that receive a C or lower must be signed by a
parent/guardian and returned to me. Signed assignments will be placed in the
Homework bin during the typical morning routine.

Late, Missing or Incomplete Assignments

If a student turns in homework that is incomplete, they will be required to complete it
during the Morning Message procedure. If a student frequently hands in incomplete
work, I will give a phone call home, and send home a homework checklist that needs to
be signed upon completion by a parent/guardian and returned to me.
If a student turns in a project/long-term assignment that is incomplete, the student will be
given one day to correct the assignment and return it to me. Two points will be deducted
from the final grade of the assignment.
If a student turns in completed homework/assignments late, they will also receive a pointdeduction; if the assignment is one day late, only one point will be deducted. If the
assignment is two days late, two points will be deducted. I will not accept any
assignments that are more than four days late.
Students who have completed their work but left it at home must hand it in the following
day. One point will be deducted from the grade.
Students who are frequently missing homework and assignments will also receive a
phone call home, and will be required to take home a homework checklist that must be
signed by a parent/guardian and returned to me.
Returning From Absence
Upon returning from an absence, students will be required to check their mailbox for
important papers/materials they missed (the Collector will gather any materials needed
for absent students and place them in their mailboxes).
Students will have two days to make up any assignments missed due to an absence.
If a student misses a test/quiz, the student will make it up during silent reading time upon
the day they return to school.
Communication Procedures with Parents/Guardians
In the beginning of the year, parents will receive a letter from me detailing my goals and
educational philosophy. I will also include my contact information for parents who may
need to contact me quickly and directly.
A weekly letter will be sent home every Friday with each student, highlighting the
important topics and ideas weve covered throughout the week.
A calendar will be sent home on the first day of every month to give parents a general
idea of topics that will be covered, upcoming events, and due-dates of large
projects/assignments.
End of the Day

In the last twenty minutes of class, students will return to their seats with a book to read
silently.
I will call children by their groups (one at a time, according to seating arrangement) to
come collect papers/materials in their mailboxes.
After every group has visited their mailbox, I will call groups (one at a time) to gather
their belongings in their cubbies.
The Collector will make sure that theyve collected all necessary materials for absent
students and placed them in the corresponding mailboxes.
The Cubby Organizer will inspect the cubby station after everyone has gathered their
belongings, making sure to straighten up if necessary.
The Room Inspector will assess the neatness of the classroom, and straighten up any outof-place materials.
Students who have reached Outstanding on the behavior scale may visit the prize bin to
collect their prize.
Students will read silently until the last 3 minutes of class. Students will then be asked to
line up, and I will take them to the designated drop-off area to board buses (or to get
picked up by a guardian, walkers will also have a designated drop-off area).
