European Union Law and Report Writing


Group Report Practice Exercise
The UK Government is undertaking a review of various aspects of European Union law, in
particular the relationship with national law. As a part of this process you have been
commissioned to write a report explaining the principles of direct and indirect effect, their
application and their interrelationship.
In your report you have been asked to address, in particular:
(a) legal basis;
(b) potential criticisms; and
(c) application as between private individuals.
Your report should be presented in an appropriate format.
You should append to your report a copy of your group rules and a completed group assessment
submission form, indicating which members of the group have been permitted to sign to confirm
their contribution. These items do not contribute to the maximum word limit.
MAXIMUM WORD LIMIT:

1,000 WORDS

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: To be submitted to your seminar tutor during your scheduled


class in week commencing 19th January 2015.
Assessment Criteria
Marks will be awarded for evidence of the following:

Identification, knowledge and understanding of relevant legal principles, legal rules and
legal institutions, including recognition and assessment of the context in which the law
operates
Analysis and synthesis of complex information
Effective written communication including making and presenting a reasoned and logical
argument
Presentation of the work in an appropriate format, including the use of NLS house-style for
referencing
Working effectively in a group
