Ursula K. Le Guin
• Ursula K. Le Guin is one of science fiction’s most
popular writers. She is also one of the genre’s
most respected. Through her novels, which
feature fantastic universes and fictional
societies, she explores the idea of dualities.
• Dualities are concepts that feature two opposing
forces, like chaos versus order or harmony
versus rebellion. Le Guin stresses the
importance of achieving a balance between
these forces in order to achieve wholeness in
life.
• Her most famous novels include the Earthsea
trilogy, The Left Hand of Darkness, and The
Lathe of Heaven, which explore themes
common to all her works, including the award-
winning “The Ones Who Walk Away from
Omelas.”
