Unit Topic: The Industrialization of the United States
Lesson 1
Lesson Topic: The Triumph of Industry
Purpose:

The purpose of this lesson is to show students how industrialization and new
technology affected the economy and society after the Civil War and
Reconstruction eras in the United States.
Background:

This lesson will serve as an introductive lesson to the Industrialization of the


United States, which will be further built upon as the Unit continues.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES

Students will analyze the factors that led to the Industrialization of


the United States in the late 1800s.
Students will explain how new inventions and innovations changed
Americans lives.
Students will describe the impact of Industrialization in the late
1800s.
Big Ideas:

Technology and Industrial growth were the driving forces that


transformed American society
Guiding Questions:

Who filled the job needs for the growing workforce?


How did Capitalism encourage entrepreneurs? (Idea of rags to
riches)
How do you think electricity transformed life? What invention helped
fuel the industrial Revolution in particular?
What advances were made in the area of transportation and
communication?
Advancement of what helped to strengthen Americas link to world
markets?

Themes:

Theme #1: Culture. This lesson will address the effects that
capitalism had on the culture by showing how it encouraged
entrepreneurship which lead to the idea of rags to riches within the
American culture. This lesson also touches on immigration which
leads to changes in the culture through diversification of citizenry.
This lesson also shows how technological innovation helps to change
the way Americans worked, communicated, and moved.
Theme #7: Production, Distribution, and consumption. This lesson
will address the effect that Industrialization had on production, how
it increased the demand of products, and the need for a larger
workforce. This lesson will also address the effects that the railroad
had on distribution of products within the United States, and how
that increased our capabilities to trade globally.
Theme #8: Science, Technology, and Society. This lesson will address
the effect that the Industrialization had on science with the
innovations being made in technology. This lesson will address how
these technological advancements such as: telephone, electricity
(light bulb); and how these advancements changed the way society
operated.
Theme #9: Global Connections. This lesson will address the effect of
innovations in transportation (railroads) and Industrial growth
played into the United States becoming a global industrial power,
and increasing the ability to trade in the global market.

We are going to use a graphic organizer for this lesson
You have the option of doing this by yourself or with a partner
Pass out graphic organizer, explain the layout, and explain what types of
answers I am expecting
Body & Transitions

Students will be partnering up or working alone


Students will be using the text to retrieve the information necessary to fill out
the organizer
I will be restating the objectives of the lesson, and restating the specific types
of answers I am looking for
I will be checking to see if everyone is on task, if there are any questions; and
addressing any needs
Closure:

Students will return to their assigned seats


Teacher led discussion at this point reviewing the graphic organizers
I will be calling on students for their responses
I will be checking to make sure that all the students have the similar
answers
I will be asking if everyone understands the information, if there are
any questions, and having them give me thumbs up or down to let me
know.
