This document contains a mid-semester exam for a Switchgear and Protection course. It is divided into three units that cover faults on overhead lines, per unit systems and symmetrical components, and protective relays. Students are asked calculation and discussion questions about symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults, fault current ratios, per unit reactance calculations, derivation of line-to-line fault current using symmetrical components, setting external reactances to limit fault current, definitions of pickup values and plug setting multipliers, types of protective relays and induction relays, and calculating operation times from relay and current transformer specifications.

Switchgear and Protection (EX-603) Maximum Marks: 40 Minimum Pass Marks: 15 Note:-.................................... Times: 2 Hours. Unit 1 (a) Discuss the possible fault on overhead lines. (b) What do you understand by short circuit? (c) What is a 3-phase symmetrical fault? Discuss the different type of unsymmetrical faults that can occur on a 3-phase system. (d) A 3-phase, 11 kV, 10 MVA alternator has sequence reactance of X 0 = 0.05 p.u., X1= 0.15 p.u. and X2 = 0.15 p.u. If the generator is on no load, find ratio of fault currents for L-G fault to that when all the 3-phases are dead short circuited.(RGPV ........) Unit 2 (a) Write down the formula of % X. (b) What is per unit system? (c) Derive an expression for fault current for line to line (L-L) fault by symmetrical components.( RGPV .......) (d) A 3-phase, 20MVA, 10 kV alternator has internal reactance of 5 % and negligible resistance. Find the external reactance per phase to be connected in series with the alternator so that steady current on short circuit does not exceed 8 times the full load current.( RGPV .......) Unit 3 (a) Define: (i) Pick- up value, (ii) Plug setting multiplier (RGPV ........) (b) What is protective relay? (RGPV ........) (c) Determine the time of operation of a 5 ampere, 3- second over current relay having a current setting of 125 % and a time setting multiplier of 0.6 connected to supply circuit through a 400/5 current transformer when the circuit carries a fault current of 4000 A. (Time of operation is 3.5 seconds)( RGPV .......) (d) Describe the different type of Induction relays. Derive the torque equation and show how different time and current settings can be obtained from it. (RGPV .......)
