• Bactericidal; interferes with bacterial
cell wall synthesis, blocks
adherence of bacteria to
ureopithelial cells.

Indication
• Uncomplicated UTIs in woman
caused by susceptible strains of
Escherichia coli and Enterococcus
faecalis; not indicated for the
treatment of pyelonephritis or
perinephric abscess.

NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
Assessment
Interventions
• Arrange for culture and sensitivity test.
• Administer drug with food if GI upset
occurs.
• Monitor clinical response; if no
improvement is seen or a relapse
occurs, send urine for repeat culture
and sensitivity tests.
• Encourage patient to observe other
measures to decrease risk of UTI.
Fosfomycin Tromethamine
Teaching Points
• This drug is meant to be one-dose treatment for
urinary tract infection; improvement should be seen
in 2-3 days. If no improvement occurs, consult your
health care provider.
• Take drug with food if GI upset occurs. Do not take in
the dry form; mix a single dose packet in 90 – 120
ml of water and stir to dissolve; do not use hot
water. Drink immediately after mixing.
• You may experience these side effects: Nausea,
abdominal pain; dizziness.
• Report rash, visual changes, sever GI problem,
weakness, tremors, worsening of urinary tract
symptoms.
