Unit 9: Constant Rate of Change

Day 12: Time allotted 55 minutes

Objectives: identify proportional and non-proportional linear relationships by finding the
constant rate of change
Essential Question: WHY are graphs helpful?
Common Core Standards: MCC8.F.5
Mathematical Practices 1, 3, 4, 5
7th Grade Mathematics - Accelerated
Vocabulary: constant rate of change, linear relationship
Bellwork: The students will write their understanding of functions, linear relationships and
proportional relationships using the correct vocabulary. Students will answer the question why
are graphs useful?
Allotted time 7 minutes
Activity #1: Student will watch a (4) minute video that teaches and illustrates proportional
relationships. Students will watch (2) illustration of how functions can vary directly
Allotted time 7 minutes
Activity#2: Students working in groups of two will take turns describing the qualitative
functional relationship between two quantities by analyzing graphs and creating graphs. The
students will take turns analyzing and discussing problems (1-4) that were reviewed the previous
day. See page 712 of text
Allotted time (6) minutes
Activity #3:
Students will work on problems 1-10 from the text.
Allotted time (14) minutes
Student working in groups of four will evaluate problems (11, 12 & 13) from the text.
Allotted time (10) minutes
Teacher and students will have an organized discussion about the problems and the answers to
the problems. The teacher will use a PHET interactive illustration to show the relationship
between real situations.
Allotted time (4) minutes
Exit Ticket Students will write their understanding of rate of change, they must use (4) of the
following terms proportional, line, coordinates, linear relationship and origin.
Formative Assessment: The formative assessment assesses the students understanding of the
lessons concepts.
Differentiations/Accommodations: multiple modes of instruction

Rationale: Help students become adept in converting between these representations. Have
student become proficient at recognizing and determining problems solving strategies for realworld situations. The speaking and listening activity causes each student to become engaged in
presenting and responsibly providing feedback regarding correct use of strategy, procedure and
academic language by their peers. The goal is to provide the class with multiple opportunities to
practice skills.
Lesson Summary: this lesson is designed to help the students gain and become adept at
recognizing and using direct relations and linear relations. The students are challenged to make
an oral presentation to their peers; this activity causes students to gain procedural and
communications skills in a pleasant and almost fun way.
