Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL
CURRICULUM
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of
academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote
positive development and learning for each and every young child, Candidates
understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content)
disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools,
and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources
to deepen their understand. Candidates use their own knowledge and other resources to
design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes
comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child. (NAEYC,
2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the fall semester of 2013 during my ECED 243- Cognitive Curriculum
course, I learned how to properly write, implement, and reflect on a lesson plan. I have
attached a copy of a lesson plan that I have implemented in my classroom at work. I
have used the developmental domain codes in the creative curriculum to determine
which skills will be focused on during each activity.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the completion and process of writing and implementing lesson plans, I
am able to create an experience that provides a learning experience for each child. I am
able to use different teaching strategies and materials to teach each student. I am able
to create an environment that is full of academic experiences and open-ended questions.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC

Standard:
This artifact shows my competence in academic design by showing the
implementation, experiences, and the outcome of a lesson plan that has been done in
my classroom. I am aware of the curriculum and each developmental domain, to ensure
that I plan meaningful, creative, and challenging activities that depend the understand
that the children may have in the skills that we are working on. I know that each child
grows and develops at their own pace, and can incorporate each need into my plans to
make sure that each child is understanding and comprehending the material that is
being introduced.
